I Found a Hidden Lake… So I Spent the Night There
NOBODY COMES HERE!
Sometimes you just need to get away.
For this trip, I headed down a remote trail to a hidden lake, set up camp beside the water, and spent two days and one night trying to slow life down for a little while.
The canoe came along, of course.
Over the next two days, I explored the lake, chased pickerel, worked the shoreline, and kept an eye out for some of the lake’s bigger bass. I didn’t exactly have the fishing trip I was hoping for… but sometimes that’s not really the point.
I also got to check back in on the loons I’ve been watching throughout the summer. Seeing them out on the water again was a pretty special part of the trip, especially knowing that the season is beginning to change and they’ll soon be moving on.
There were quiet mornings, long stretches of paddling, fishing, campfires, wildlife, and plenty of time to just sit back and take it all in.
And that’s really what this trip became about.
Life moves fast. Work, responsibilities, phones, schedules, and everything else can make it pretty difficult to slow down. Out here, things are different. There’s not much to worry about beyond where you’re going to fish next and whether you’ve got enough firewood for the night.
For two days, that was enough.
This is a simple wilderness getaway — a canoe, a fishing rod, a campsite, a fire, and a hidden lake.
No big expedition. No fancy gear. No guaranteed fish.
Just a couple of days outside.
And honestly, sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
🎣 THE FISHING
The goal for this trip was to target pickerel and explore some new areas of the lake. On the second morning, I planned to work the lily pads with a topwater frog and see if I could connect with a bucketmouth or two.
Watch and find out what i caught.
🦆 THE LOONS
One of my favorite parts of returning to this lake has been watching the loons throughout the summer. These birds have been raising their young here, and by late summer, things are starting to change as they prepare for the transition ahead.
🔥 CAMPING
After a day on the water, there isn’t much better than getting back to camp, starting a fire, cooking some food, and sitting beside the lake as the sun goes down.
There’s something about being out there that makes everything else feel a little less important.
🚣 THE TRIP
Two days.
One night.
One hidden lake.
One canoe.
A lot of fishing.
And, unfortunately… not a lot of fish.
But that’s fishing.
Thanks for coming along for the trip.
