I Fished Against the Best Locals (Tuesday Nighter)

Fresh off a dead-last finish at the Bassmaster Elite Series on Santee Cooper, I came home to Lake Eagle Mountain to fix what went wrong — and to finally figure out the little finesse bait that’s been killing everybody on forward-facing sonar. The plan was simple: put the swimbait DOWN and learn the FFS deal. The plan lasted about four minutes.

This is everything I love and hate about tournament bass fishing wrapped into one Tuesday night derby — giant bass chasing a big swimbait, a 7-pound bruiser that crushed it, the one that came off and cost us, and a whole lot of getting humbled by the locals. We talk shad spawn, reading the bass spawn off the ducks, why versatility wins, and why I just can’t seem to put a glide bait down even when it’s costing me.
