Today I headed out to the West Sacramento area looking for bluegill and shellcracker using a 1-inch Black Flex Bug on a 1/80 oz jig head. The fishing was excellent, with multiple keeper-sized bluegill and redear sunfish coming to hand throughout the morning.

But the most surprising moment came when I noticed something I’ve never seen before. A male bluegill that had a bright orange chest appeared to darken dramatically after being out of the water for only a short time. I managed to capture the color change on camera and would love to hear your thoughts on what caused it.
