BASS FISHING BOAT DOCKS
Fishing docks is a time-honored technique among bass fishermen, especially those targeting largemouth bass. DeRose emphasizes the need to pay attention to the details, such as the spacing between docks and the proximity of deep water to the docks. He uses his map to locate docks adjacent to deeper water, providing bass quick access to varied feeding opportunities and water temperatures.
SELECTING THE RIGHT BAIT
DeRose discusses several good bait options for dock fishing bass, including Texas-rigged plastics and jigs. However, he finds slow-falling wacky rigged stick baits the most effective, day in and day out. Weightless stickbaits like the CrushCity Pigstick fall slowly and with a tantalizing shimmy; this extended time in the strike zone is a proven way to attract and trigger bass. He strategically targets corners and areas under the docks, allowing the bait to fall naturally and watching his line for signs of a bite.
ESSENTIAL CASTING GEAR FOR DOCK FISHING
Choosing the right gear is crucial for successful dock fishing. DeRose prefers a straight fluorocarbon line with his casting setup. He explains the importance of watching the line for any movement that indicates a bite.
For rods, DeRose uses a medium-heavy, fast-action rod. He stresses that a medium-heavy rod with a fast taper delivers excellent accuracy and the power to extract bass from the cover.
TIPS FOR SPINNING GEAR
DeRose also discusses the benefits of spinning gear for dock fishing, most notably its ease of use. He prefers a 2500-size reel spooled up with a braided mainline to a strong fluorocarbon leader in the 14-pound range. This setup allows for precise casting but with plenty of strength. He advises using high-visibility braid for better bite detection.
THE ART OF PERSISTENCE
DeRose demonstrates the importance of persistence in dock fishing. He maximizes his chances of finding bass by thoroughly covering every possible hiding spot, including the shallow and deep sides of docks, under boats, and around rails. He emphasizes the need to remain patient and adaptable, always ready to adjust techniques based on the bass’s behavior.
