ESSENTIAL GEAR SETUP
Downey starts by detailing the gear needed for dock fishing with a wacky rig. He emphasizes the importance of the proper hook with a crossover band, explaining its advantages over thinner bands typically used in wacky rigging. The crossover band’s wider surface reduces the risk of tearing the worm, allowing anglers to use the same worm multiple times, enhancing both efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
WHY CHOOSE A WACKY RIG FOR DOCKS?
The wacky rig, characterized by its simple yet effective setup—a hook pinned through the center of a soft plastic worm—provides a simple presentation that’s extremely enticing to bass up shallow during the warmer months. Downey explains how this setup mimics many different types of forage that bass feed on, making it very effective for bass lurking near docks.
TECHNIQUES FOR SUCCESS
There are a lot of places to catch summertime bass on natural lakes, but boat docks provide the best shade and overhead cover. Technique, then, becomes essential for accurate skipping success. Focusing on technique, Downey shares his approach to skipping wacky rigs under docks—a method that requires accurate casts to target bass seeking refuge from the summer heat. He offers practical tips on rod selection, recommending a 7-foot medium-fast action rod for optimal control and precision. A brightly colored line can also help by making your line jump when a fish bites.

What size line do you use and what kind of line?
Ok, thanks for explaining another difference in using the crossover band. I just thought it was kind of gimmicky. I fish from bank and rarely have any place to skip. We aren't allowed to fish near the boat docks in Southern California; legal issues.
And a spinnerbait for the in-between
I have fewer torn worms with the band, but I lose more whole worms on hook sets.
Never seem to see people using my favorite wacky hook. Perhaps I’m using the wrong hook lol. My favorite is the finesse wide gap gama in 2/0.
Bigger hook than wev usually see, I like it
Good stuff Bob!

Thanks for the tips my friend!
