How to Spy Bait for Bass! EFFECTIVE Technique!! #bassfishing #fishingvideo #fishing

In this video, I take y’all out to share a special technique I’ve learned! This technique is called Spy Baiting and it’s a super effective way to catch fish that would not bite otherwise. It’s a slow and subtle way to fish but it’s just as effective as a drop shot rig or a jerk bait if done correctly.

Purchase the spy bait I was using here :

Fishing with a spy bait for bass involves a few key techniques:

1. **Choosing the Right Gear**:
– Use a medium to medium-light spinning rod and a reel with a 6-8 lb test fluorocarbon line. This setup allows for better casting and sensitivity.

2. **Selecting Your Spy Bait**:
– Spy baits typically have a slender shape and are usually around 3-5 inches long. Colors can vary, but natural or shad patterns are often effective.

3. **Casting**:
– Cast your spy bait out to likely bass areas, such as near the edges of weed beds, around rocks, or underwater structures.

4. **Retrieving**:
– Slow and steady is key. Use a gradual retrieve, allowing the bait to sink down until it’s just above the cover you want to work. You may pause briefly to mimic a struggling baitfish. Lean forward when you pause the bait. It allows the lure to fall and shimmy at the same time!
– Vary your retrieve speed. Incorporate small twitches but only if the bass are hitting the lure when you work it this way.

5. **Paying Attention to the Line**:
– Watch for any unusual changes in your line tension or movement, indicating a bite. Bass often hit spy baits lightly, so be ready to set the hook quickly. When setting the hook, give the bait a short pop and keep pressure on it. This constant pressure is key in keeping the small hooks pinned.

6. **Fishing Conditions**:
– Spy baits work well in clear water conditions, especially during post-spawn periods and in cooler temperatures, as they can trigger a response from bass that are often less aggressive.

Remember to experiment with different speeds and pauses to find the most effective retrieve for the specific conditions you’re facing.
