How to Fish the Smallmouth Bass Spawn – Bass fishing tips and techniques

There isn’t very much information out there that talks about how to fish the smallmouth bass spawn so I headed to Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee to put together a bass fishing video about it. This video is full of great fishing tips and techniques for bass.

  1. I smallie fished 20 or so beds for hours the other day in 1 to 5 feet of crystal clear Montana water. They were sitting on beds and even after missing hooksets and catching them, they would go immediately back.

  2. Gene I agree with most of what you teach, but I have to say I strongly disagree with what you said about smallmouth not biting while locked on a bed and on what depth they spawn on DH. I fish Dale Hollow a lot during the spawn and they will absolutely bite when locked on. They are actually very aggressive while spawning and easy to catch. In my experience they will also spawn almost just as shallow as largemouth. They will spawn in 2-20 feet on Dale Hollow. The fish that spawn on the bluff walls of Dale Hollow tend to spawn deep but a lot of the smallmouth that spawn on the main lake flats will spawn in 3-7 feet of water. Love the videos man and if your ever back this way again and want to fish Dale Hollow then just leave a comment here. You would love the deep grass bite that follows the spawn because it's phenomenal day or night. Tight Lines buddy.

  3. Very helpful lesson, Dean. I've heard before how the spawning ritual of smallmouth differs from largemouth: more "area fishing" instead of sight-fishing , with some exceptions. So, how to fish for spawning smallmouth, when you want to be stealthy and may not be able to see them? I was beginning to feel a bit inferior and intimidated, but you answered my question and gave me some confidence….fan-cast the likely areas they're in. Good way to for me to start. Always appreciate that I feel like you are reaching-out to anglers, at all levels, but are, particularly, helpful to "duffers" like myself. Enjoy your vids. Keep 'em up!

  4. I live about a mile from dale hollow lake and I fish there all the time. I mostly catch bluegill but I'm wanting to start small mouth fishing. What are some of the best bait to use when fishing for small mouth

  5. I had purchased a few packs of the swim baits and either I don't have to lure heavy enough and even though fishing slow to get the desired action from it, I still come up empty handed on lakes near me.

  6. Totally different scenario to what we have on Havasu, Mead and Mohave. The water is super clear (20+' of vis usually) and the smallies will spawn fairly shallow. We were sight fishing the beds on Havasu in 5-7' of water on gravel flats. You could see the beds from a ways off thanks to the dark colored rock under the silt. Stand back a bit and pitch a 1/4 oz shaky head onto the bed and hold on!

  7. Hey Gene: True or false spinning gear is only for light tackle and finesse fishing. If Not then how big a spinning set up with line and lure size can you get away with for bass. Thanks… 🎣😎

  8. Hey Gene: Thoughts and prayers still with you and everyone that was close to Ryan. Let's hope his tragedy can help others with those issues see the light and get help. Keep up the great videos…🐟😎

  9. hey gene, just like to tell ya, dont stop what youre doing. im only sub'd to you and mike now. no more googen bs.

p.s. although i like long content, id like these 10min video. easy to consume and doesnt take as long. thanks

  10. Like smallmouth fishing????  Gene you need to come to Northern Wisconsin's Vilas and Oneida Counties.  Between the two there are 281 lakes with smallmouth bass (I just counted).   Lots of them are smaller and perfect for Kayak fishing.  My best in Wisconsin is a 6.2 but I did catch one over 7#s in Dale Hollow.

  11. I know that smallmouth prefer the deeper water especially in the hotter months, but I live in quebec, Canada and the lake I fish has exclusively smallmouth. I've fished this lake all my life and I've always had success in shallow water (5-10 feet). And in the spring I find the smallmouth spawning in that same 5-10 foot range where the bottom has a nice little gravel and some rocks for cover. I guess it can really vary depending on the lake and conditions of that lake. Love the videos, keep it up! 🙂

  12. Thanks for the difference in spawning characteristics between a LMB and SMB gene! I'm always grateful for your willingness to give away your hard earned knowledge to us… for free!

  13. Nice! Wish I saw this before this past weekend. Fished a tournament and all we caught were smallies. People were sight fishing the shallow clear water looking for beds and even smallies. My mistake was my swim baits were way too big. Lesson learned.

  14. Spent the 1st 8 years of my life bank camping on Dale Hollow every Labor Day weekend. Finally got back over there last year and rented a houseboat with the Fam. It was SO Great being back there. L O V E Dale Hollow!
