Hi, Bryan Thrift, MLF Bass Pro Tour Angler, here. By using a fluke-style trailer, I can keep my bait about one to one and a half feet off the bottom, maintaining it in the strike zone longer. I also like using a swimbait-style trailer with a smaller tail on my Z-Man Jackhammer Chatterbait because it doesn’t fight against the blade’s action. The Damiki armor Shad swimbait is perfect for this. During a shad spawn, I love the extra kick it gives. For a crawfish color Chatterbait, I customize the trailer by removing the side appendages to reduce drag. I fish my Chatterbait like a square bill and jig, making angled casts around dock columns and parallel casts along the edges, letting it sink a couple of feet before retrieving.
