How to catch spawning bass | Ep. 1 — Big Females at a Surprise Final Stop!

Spawn season is in full swing in the northern suburbs of Illinois — and in this first episode, I set out to chase big bass in shallow water using my go-to plastic craw bait. Fishing alongside my neighbor AJ and my 5-year-old daughter, we hit up Axehead Lake (briefly) before relocating to two familiar ponds and two new ones in Vernon Hills.

The bass were in all different stages — some guarding fry, others staging or cruising. Conditions changed from spot to spot, but by the end of the morning, we found the bite.

Trip Time: 8 a.m. to noon
Weather: Mild, partly cloudy, low 60s Gear Used:
• Bizz Baits Green Pumpkin/Black Craw (weightless)
• 6’10” ML spinning rod
• 8 lb fluorocarbon

The final stop off a busy roadside changed everything — three bass, all over 3 lbs, smoked the craw through grass lines and gravel flats.
