People I fly fished with used to laugh cause I wear camouflage when wading the river. I'd rather look like a tree than a bright flash of color. I think it helps. Also when I kayak I have a padded spot you can lay your paddle down quietly.
I was recently watching a Bassmaster “ unfiltered” episode with Scott Martin on Day 1 of an Elite Tournament at Okeechobee. Scott was fishing very shallow protected little area of spawning bass. I was amazed at the amount of noise created by Scott and his cameraman. Rods rattling around, boat deck compartment lids dropping and thumping. Regular talking back and forth. I would have thought in these very sensitive shallow water situations, a stealth presentation would have been paramount.
Also keep your shadow away from your targets.
Read an article years ago about a man who would take an iron skillet and bang on his metal boat, said he caught big stringers like that,I fish with radio on low seems to have no effect
Watch the old fisherman literally stomping his foot on the boat to get them stirred up and he Katches Fish.
This is true for sure. I started fishing out of a kayak and it helped me learn a stealth approach.
I used to fish with an old guy who used an 18 foot Bream Buster with a popping bug on one end. He made more noise in the boat than anybody can believe. He bumped and banged his sculling paddle on the gunnels on every stroke. He would slide and grate his tackle box across the bottom of the metal jon boat. And he caught fish, including bass, like nobody I have ever fished with. It left me scratching my head more than once.
Years ago I was bass fishing with shiners on Okeechobee with one of the top guides on the lake. We were on the Kissimmee River maybe a couple miles from the lake. We had caught probably 15-20 and a bass boat that was in a tournament was coming towards us running his trolling motor. We had four shiners out at the time. Guide says we might as well pull them in as the bite would stop. I asked why, and he said because of their trolling motor.
To prove it, he left the most active shiner in the water. He said the shiner would stop pulling. When the boat got about 30-40 yards away sure enough the shiner totally stopped. The guy yelled over and asked how we were doing. We told him not all that good and he kept moving, running his trolling motor.
When he got maybe 30 yards away from us, the shiner started pulling again and we put the other three back in. With the fish I caught that day I would have taken 1st had I been in the tournament but live bait is illegal. Anyway, that the reason the guide always anchors.
What would make you think a bass can hear or feel a lure ten feet away but can’t feel a trolling motor that makes 100x the vibration?
Also, when we musky fish they will follow without biting. Invariably the other guy in the boat will yell “you’ve got a follow” and more times than not the fish will peel off and disappear.
Fish can tell you are walking along the bank. You are in their back yard. They are like deer.
This is true for us bank anglers as well. Something the game show channels don't worry about because of their editing that depicts a catch on every cast .
Randy thank you for knowledge and experience !
