Once a niche lure category, glide baits have become productive mainstream swimbaits for bass anglers looking for bites and those chasing giants alike. Wired2fish contributor, Nick Smith of the Informative Fisherman (https://wired2.fish/InformativeFisherman), dives deep into the topic of why, how, and when to use glide baits. Through the process, he instills the confidence to use glide baits to catch numbers of bass, big bass, and perhaps most importantly, learn where the big ones live.

While effective at catching fish, glide baits also excel at revealing where big fish live; they exhibit a wide side-to-side “S” motion on the retrieve that bass can’t resist inspecting. Like musky fishing, following bass reveal where they live and allow you to build high-percentage milk runs. You can then try coaxing bites through retrieve changes and bait experimentation, or try catching them using different tactics altogether.
Smith shares some important boat positioning and casting angle principles. Long, parallel casts are ideal for keeping the bait in the strike zone, which then affords you to experiment with different retrieves ranging from slow and steady, steady with kick-outs to the side, or full-on freestyle. Smith explains how to do each to appeal to the broadest mood range of fish possible.
Lastly, Smith shares a wealth of information related to gear selection ranging from the right bait, rod setup, the benefit of upgrading to braided treble hooks, and his favorite glide bait for both performance and affordability.

Awesome job giving some insight on a technique that I have wanted to learn….. thank you sir!
Tip: you have to “Lob” savage glides because they helicopter terrible.
Love this whole video. Great breakdown of glide baits and gear.
Wow, that's incredible! Can you suggest some distributor names where I can buy them? I'm particularly interested in lead baits.
Very informative! What gear ratio u typically use?
Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.
What’s the maximum depth of water you should fish a glide bait
Haha that little dog was having an exciting time!
I like those new savage Grip trebles! What size should I get for the 7". You keep getting better and better Nick!
Very helpful video thank you 🙏🏾
'Pro' Randy Blaukat needs to watch this video after his humiliating loss the past weekend..LOLOLOLOL
What about gear ratio? I recently bought the Shimano curado 300 4:7:1 and I’m worried that may be to slow. Can you possibly confirm if that was a good purchase or not?
Great Tips!! Best I've Seen On Glides 🎣
This guy needs to teach bass fishing at every college in the US!!! What a teacher, very enjoyable to listen to!!

– keep up the good work
Lovely bait bud, outstanding work again. I was happy when you said you were using heavy braid for testing the lure. It amazes me how many big baits are lost due to line snapping on the cast. When beach casting in the sea we use a formula of 10lb per 1 oz weight for determination of shock leader strength. When using heavy lures on powerful swimbait rods I apply the same logic, but instead of shock leader I use straight up braid to the lure or bite leader, for tooth fish like pike, so for a 6oz lure it is 60lb braid straight through. Also if I get snagged I nearly alway get my lure back
Great video! My set up ; 8’6” irod extra heavy mag paired up with an Okuma Citrix 364. Killer set up for those who don’t want to break the bank! Also, Savage Gear has some unreal swimbaits at incredible prices!🎣

"I've been fishing glide baits for several years now and Dude knows his craft,he doing everything I do and I get bit on them all year long, and you don't have to spend tons of money doing it,Great Job Brother"
Great instructional video!! Just started throwing glide baits myself. What size kastking reel are you using?
Can I use one of these glide baits on a spinning reel?
The 9" magnum glide in "crappie" is 1 of the best looking lures I've seen….."white bass" color in the 7 and/or 9" would be a game changer, on certain lakes!
Now you’re letting the go to bait out. I’ve been hanging monster in north Florida
5:19 that bite was so satisfying
Show them how we do it in Cali where the big ones roam!!!
Nick @ informative fisherman is the man. Awesome video. Great footage, great shots. Appreciate it guys. Been a fan a long time. Keep it up.
Probably the best bass instructional video I’ve ever seen. You definitely got me wanting to try a glide bait. Thank you.
