I had just fished an Ohio Kayak Bass Fishing tournament on Nimisila Reservoir in Ohio (tournament video on any GGF channel!) and we were all relaxing at the campground when I decided that this was the perfect time to try to get over my fear of taking my kayak out at night. I’m pretty okay with going out around 3am because I know sunrise is coming, but I am really scared of the dark water at night and have always shied away from night fishing. Since everything becomes less scary each time I do it, I made myself take advantage of this opportunity and launch my Lynx for some full moon night fishing. ended up only getting one bass and pretty much being too tense and worried to really enjoy myself even though my buddy, Utah, came out to fish which helped a little, but I am proud of myself for trying and I know the next time it will be easier. Plus it was really a gorgeous night and Nimisila is such a pretty lake, I would have been so mad at myself if I had chickened out and not even tried!
Thanks to Strictly Sail & Kayak for my amazing Hobie Lynx kayak… the fact that I feel so safe and comfortable on my Lynx is the only reason I would even consider this crazy night fishing plan! Strictly Sail & Kayak is a small family business that does so much to support the local kayak angling community as well as being the main sponsor of both of my local tournament trails, Ohio Kayak Fishing Trail and Cincinnati Kayak Fishing. Night fishing is ok. I like starting in the dark and going to daylight is best.
Ive never fished Nimisilia at night but have fished the Turkeyfoot area and have caught some Monsters at night. AS we know we should use the buddy system if possible especially at night. Congratulations on conquering that fear it just takes some time to get use to. I'm surprised there isn't a light at the ramp? It's been a few years since I night fished there but could have sworn there was a light?
Enjoy! I night fish saltwater a lot here in VB. It is quite. cool and very productive. Get a headlamp and also a led flashlight. I use red b/c it does not kill my night vision. Thx for sharing.
nice adventure! doesnt take me long to mess up a baitcaster in the dark… lol
Congrats on giving it a go. Advice from a lifetime of night fishing, both bank and by boat on fresh water rivers and lakes. Always pack a small backup light source. Anything you don't wnt to lose, tether it somehow. Never go out alone on such a small craft alone. It's too dangerous and things can go south in heartbeat. If possible always team up on the water, bank fishing usually fine. Again I salute you for trying, not many people, male or female is comfortable under those conditions. The moon was absolutely beautiful tho. Take care, fish on and see ya next time.😊
1 of my most freaky moments night fishing on the ohio river in my bass boat, going to different creeks….a VERY thick fog set in & it took me hours to find Tanner's creek to get back to the ramp…gotta admit, i was a bit nervous back then as everything was just completely covered in fog
Get an LED head lamp. Fishfinder allows mark coordinates (launch and return) and trace your path. Look at the bright side.. if you were in Florida, you'd be surrounded by gators. A night kayak mission is in my future soon.. not something I'd do solo tho.
Wait until a beaver smacks its' tail next to the kayak 😂
I love going out at night! Once you do it a couple times you’ll get more comfortable and use to it, it’s good to do it on a lake you know being with someone is always something that will keep you more comfortable! Great Video
Not to mention the snakes 😂😂😂
That was a difficult watch for me. I have many many positive memories of fishing at night mostly by myself, but occasionally with others from shore or by boat. I have done it hundreds of times. I wanted for you to experience a bit of that. Your level of anxiety was bordering on terror. I feel so bad that you were so scared by something that I wouldn't give a second thought to doing in a truly dangerous environment,, which fishing alone in darkness is regardless of your gender. If you never try night fishing alone again, I can understand why.
Cool video!
My opinion is that night fishing would be safer because there's no idiots on jet skis , party pontoons, and Miami Vice 28ft cigarette speed boats side swiping you.
Last time I went to Salt Fork a couple weeks ago to bank and kayak fish , I didn't get the kayak down. Too many idiots on the water that day. I almost got rolled a couple years ago in sit in kayak up there
At least there are no big snakes up there like around these parts 😳 It is about the only time I carry while on the water.
Booo…a headlight is your friend 😉 Throw black top water baits or black spinnerbaits 👊😎
Melissa that is a big step in your fishing experience any type of night fishing should be done in a group or at least a team angler that is right by your side! I’m so glad you did what you did and braved it as much as you did, your safety and security is the upmost you have to think about out there. I would have a whole list of things you have to have at night what if’s! Wow so glad you are ok, definitely went from crawling to running in this adventure lol! Tight lines take care and God bless!
Not for me. Seen to many scary movies.
I can relate to the first time night fishing in a Yak. It was that very lake in the 80s.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Girl gone night fishing!😮
