I found a surprisingly productive fishing spot in Stockton, California, and the bluegill and shellcracker bite was on! 🎣

Fishing with an ultralight setup, a 1-inch Flex Bug and a 1/80 oz jig head, I caught bluegill, shellcrackers (redear sunfish), and even a few largemouth bass.

The key technique on this trip was casting downstream and slowly retrieving the jig upstream. The current was moving the bait too quickly when I let it drift naturally, but slowly working the Flex Bug upstream gave the fish more time to chase it down.

I started with a black 1-inch Flex Bug, then switched to white and orange as the bite changed. The shellcrackers put up an especially strong fight, and the evening bite produced fish after fish.
