Fishing Acton Lake at Hueston Woods -Cincinnati Kayak Fishing Bass Tournament

This was the Cincinnati Kayak Fishing Bass tournament at Acton Lake in Hueston Woods State Park near Oxford, Ohio. This is an annual stop for our trail, and three years ago I found my first-ever “spot” at a local lake when I went up the feeder creek and found a bunch of smallmouth bass eating the fry out of the culverts under the campground road. Well, this year they bulldozed the road and built a bridge so my spot is gone! I went last weekend to Acton to scout for this tournament and discovered the destruction, so I knew I had to try and find something on the main lake instead but there was an endless merry-go-round of boats lining the shore going around the lake which I hate so I tried to find something off shore but while there were tons of fish I didn’t find any bass. I did catch a bunch of bluegill and crappie in the shallow grass, so I decided to go all-in on the shallow bank grass bite. I caught a lot of tiny largemouth bass, luckily CKF allows us to photo and submit bass 8″ and larger, so I ended up with a mix of 11 & 12 inch bass for my limit… but at least I got a limit!

I am proud of how I figured something out to catch some fish after my initial plan fell apart but I do need to find the bigger fish somehow! I’m starting to understand some things that didn’t make sense before and I am really excited to get back out there and keep learning!
