In this video, I show y’all an awesome way to catch Largemouth Bass in the month of September! Catching bass in September using a buzz bait can be very effective as bass are often active and feeding aggressively. Here are some directions to help you:
1. **Timing**: Early morning and late afternoon are prime times for using a buzz bait. Fish tend to be more active during these periods. The water is slowly cooling off due to the lower temperatures at night during September and this signals to the Bass that Fall is here. They start packing on the extra weight they know they will need to survive the winter and they are primarily targeting bait fish to do so. This makes them more aggressive!
2. **Location**: Bass will begin to move up shallow. They will seek bait fish in creeks, flats and just about anywhere the little tasty nuggets can hide. Focus on shallow water areas, especially near cover such as:
– Weeds and grass beds (especially the edges!)
– Fallen trees or brush piles
– Docks and boat ramps
– Points and rocky outcrops
3. **Weather Conditions**: Overcast days can enhance buzz bait effectiveness since bass are more likely to roam around looking for food. On sunny days, target shaded areas. Sunny days are a good day to switch to a thicker trailer like a Buzz Toad or Ribbit Frog. You’ll be making more cast into the weeds instead of just the edges.
4. **Retrieve Technique**:
– Cast the buzz bait beyond the target area.
– Use a steady, fast retrieve to create noise and surface commotion. Adjust the speed depending on the bass’s response.
– Occasionally pause the retrieve to entice strikes.
– I also give the lure short pops from time to time. It works!
5. **Tackle Setup**:
– Rod: Use a medium-heavy spinning or baitcasting rod for better control.
– Reel: Choose a gear ratio that allows for fast retrieves (7:1 is ideal).
– Line: Fluorocarbon or braided line (15-30 lbs test) works well for both sensitivity and strength. Only add Fluorocarbon if the water is not stained. Otherwise, use straight braid!
6. **Buzz Bait Type**: Choose a buzz bait that has a good blade for noise and a skirt that adds bulk. White, black or chartreuse colors are typically effective. I usually use black if the sky is gloomy but white will sometimes work too.
7. **Presentation**: Keep the bait just below the surface to create a popping noise. Pay attention to any surface strikes and be ready to set the hook promptly. If I really want to slow down my lure, I use a quad blade buzz bait.
By following these guidelines, you’ll enhance your chances of successfully catching bass with a buzz bait in September!
