Finesse Swimbaits For BIG Smallmouth! (Fishing With Matt’s Dad)

Come along as we explore a new clear water lake in Michigan! Its full of prespawn Smallmouth and Northern Largemouth. They’re feeding in schools along the edges of shallow flats and we’re casting a variety of finesse swimbaits and hair jigs to catch them. If you’ve wondered what fishing is like in the North, its on fire!

Its been a while since we’ve had Matt’s dad on the boat. In true form, he set the pace with a bunch of quality fish, leaving Matt and CC with a lot of ground to make up. Each member of the team settled on a different swimbait and all produced quality fish throughout the day. At the end Matt picked up a black hair jig and stuck some nice bonus fish as well.

Smallmouth pull incredibly hard for their size. If you’ve never targeted them on finesse tackle, you need to give it a try! Below you’ll find links to the exact baits we were using as well as the gear we trusted to get these fish in the boat. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

  1. Love seeing the “Northern bass fishing” trips that you guy do and I hope to see more. It helps myself as a 🇨🇦 bass angler put a plan together when the conditions are right for what you guys are fishing in (early spring conditions) as well. Thank you for that! 👍🏻👍🏻

  2. Back in my days of "working" that was "my kind" of vacation too👏. Now (retired) it'sa life-style and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Traveling in our motor coach and fishing the places we travel to is a dream come true. Yep😁, retirement is 👍.

  3. Love your videos you and your family are very inspirational! It would be awesome to see you guys come to Northern Idaho and fish Lake Pend Orielle and Coeur D’Alene lake two amazing fisheries that produce some of the best fish.

  5. Matt, are you still traveling with a camper and toeing the boat or truck and boat with hotels?
Love to know what works for you for an idea, thanks.

  6. This video is so speaks to where we're at in my state of Maine. Spent the last four days fishing exactly the same way that Matt, CC and his father were fishing. Being up here in the Northeast and chasing smallies, I don't always connect with some of the videos that you post about catching monster largemouth in the south, but this video really connected with me and the way I fish up here in the North. Great video, thanks for sharing, look forward to some of your other videos where you guys are up north chasing smallies.

  7. Love this. Still up here around Toronto Ontario we've got 3 weeks until bass season opens up. This just makes betting patient that much harder. Gotta get some toothy critters in the meantime

  8. Very cool. One thing I just noticed is that you crank from the right with your bait caster and from the left on your spinning set up. A little ambidextrous. 👍

  9. Watching this video I enjoyed catching these fish again. When Matt was young I hoped he would become a pilot so he could take me to Alaska so I could fish. He had a better plan. Matt became a fisherman and he sometimes takes me fishing. Some of Gods greatest blessings are unanswered prayers. If you can, take your father fishing.
