Finding Bass When They Leave the Bank

Join me on another trip back to Ballston Lake, one of my favorite local lakes here in the Capital Region! 🎣

Ballston Lake offers a little bit of everything, from expansive lily pads and vegetation that create opportunities to flip, pitch, and frog, to deeper ledges and offshore rock piles that can hold some quality bass.

I went into this trip expecting to find a solid shallow flipping bite, but the fish had other plans. After struggling to get the shallow bite going, I was able to make some adjustments and find quality fish on offshore rock piles and roaming largemouth and smallmouth.

The two main players for me were a jig and minnow and an offshore football jig. Both have proven to be incredibly reliable baits during the summer months, especially when the fish move away from the bank and start relating to deeper structure.

Sometimes the key to a good day on the water is simply being willing to abandon your original game plan and follow the fish!
