In this episode, I head out to a brand-new fishing location in West Sacramento, California to see if it’s worth the trip for bank anglers. One of my favorite parts of fishing is exploring new waters, and every new pond is a puzzle waiting to be solved. From the moment I arrived, I could tell this wasn’t going to be an easy day. The water was extremely green and murky, making visibility poor and forcing me to adjust my strategy.
I started by working the shoreline and casting parallel to the bank, expecting fish to be holding close to the edges. Early on, I caught a few small bluegill and a bass, but the action was slow. After covering nearly a third of the pond with very little success, I kept moving until I found an area that completely changed the day.
The difference was the rock-lined shoreline. Unlike the sandy beach side of the pond, the rocks provided cover for baitfish and panfish, giving bluegill a place to hide from predators and the hot summer sun. Once I located that stretch of bank, I was able to catch multiple quality bluegill from the same area by making repeated casts to the same target.
For this trip, I used a 1-inch black Flex Bug paired with a 1/80 oz jig head. In dirty water, darker colors create a stronger silhouette, making it easier for fish to locate the bait. Instead of covering water quickly, I focused on getting the lure directly in front of the fish because, in murky conditions, they often won’t travel very far to eat. That small adjustment made all the difference.
Although several fish had visible sores, there were also healthy fish mixed in. Because of the condition of some of the fish, I personally wouldn’t recommend harvesting them from this pond. As always, use your own judgment and follow local fishing regulations.
If you’re looking for a place to introduce someone to fishing or simply want another public bank fishing destination in the Sacramento area, this pond can still provide some fun action—especially if you focus on the rock side during the summer months. While fishing conditions will change throughout the year, this trip clearly showed how important structure can be when searching for fish.
