I headed to Lake Perris after work expecting the same shallow summer pattern that’s been producing fish, but this trip reminded me how quickly things can change.
I started on the south bank with no bites and very little sign of life. From there I moved to the east corner and fished the flooded dead trees out to 20 feet without a single bite. It wasn’t until I worked back into the shallow water along the east bank that I finally found a few willing fish.
The final tally was 3 bass, with only 1 keeper. Every fish came on a green pumpkin finesse worm, but it took covering a lot of water and making adjustments to get bit.
Heavy recreational boat traffic and strong evening winds made for a challenging afternoon, but even tough trips teach us something. Every outing helps build a better understanding of how Lake Perris changes throughout the summer.
If you’re fishing Perris, let me know how your recent trips have been. Are you still finding fish shallow, or have you noticed the bite changing too?
Thanks for watching, and as always, tight lines!
