  1. At 58, I'm not really old, but working in the trades my whole life it has taken its toll.
I try to fish every other day, and I start out power fishing cranks, chatter baits, whatever I think will work. But after a time, my arthritis started to slow me down. And I usually end up dragging a worm or drop-shot. It's all good, though. You have to know your limitations.
    Tight lines.
    Regards, Steven.

  2. Randy, this is one of your absolute best videos and I have been a sub when you had 3k. Larry Nixon is a friend and my personal favorite angler of all time. THANKS for your great personal perspective!

  3. This is not the 1st time you brought this up. I remember not liking you saying "Get your butt in the gym"! But as I thought about it, of course, you are right. I cannot get up super early AND stay out all day long in the summer like I did when I was 20. Also I dont fish to catch dinks all day. After my old Gambler boat helped be get my 2nd back surgery, I got a 20ft nitro dual counsel that takes the wakes much better and rarely run over 4500 rpms anymore. I pitch my Jig into prime spots for better fish and am happy with it! Thanks Randy

  4. This is one of the best videos Randy has done. I’m 58 and just starting to fish again with a small bass club. I was overwhelmed with all the new stuff and trying to get back into the sport after 30 years . Took time over the last 30 years to be a dad , father and husband to 4 great kids and an amazing wife. She told me it’s time for me to pick up a hobby and no question it was fishing. You gotta love a wife who says , let’s go to Academy and Bass Pro and get some new equipment. But I am old school, few worms , few top water’s and a rattletrap. Love your videos. If you are ever near Auburn , Ala let me buy your dinner.

  5. Hey Randy. I’m 76 and still regularly take my bass boat to the lake. I only fish four hours or so at a time. I have to fish from a chair and not stand up very much. Being retired, I only go on nice days because I’m too old to fight the weather anymore. I fish moving baits mostly and can still catch nice bass. Even though I’m not on the lake very long , I really enjoy being out there. I can’t fish like I used to 50 years ago but it’s still fun to catch ‘em.

  6. At 64 my fishing has gone to crap 2 stubborn to quit. It would have been nice to have all this easy tackle back then like we do now. Daves brother Kenny introduced me to bass fishing in 1980 Nothing helps more than having someone good helping you.

  7. Slow and steady. Same thing I did in my career as carpenter. I was slower than most but it was done right. I always got the good jobs no matter the cost, people still calling me after retiring four years ago

  8. I’ve always fished slow no matter what I’m throwing , I learned fishing a worm and it’s still my go to if I can’t catch ‘em with power , I can always rely on it too , and I love pitching a soft plastic , a jig and trailer , I even like pitching a spinnerbait , pitching a spinnerbait works so well for me depending on the cover I’m fishing like in the cypress or Gum trees we have here

  9. I’m turning 64 in January. In my younger years about the same time you were fishing tournaments I was fishing 35-50 tournaments a year. Several local tournaments,BFL and open tournaments.
Now at this point I’m very selective on what tournaments I fish in. Let’s face it with age comes wisdom, but at the cost of the body for sure. Great subject.

  10. I'm 70 , the fire and skills are still there . Used to do better then average in most tourneys . I believe a lot of the so called slow down is due to the amount of anglers on the water . Up till last year I fished a lot of the local tourneys , but by myself against teams . I've been in the money a few times but being alone is a big handicap . Plus I fish out of a highly modified 1436 john so the wind kills me . I love your vids and agree with a lot of the things you say . Lack of mobility is a key factor also .

  11. I fish with my buddy on tournaments and he's 57 and I'm 62. He Burn fishing while I like slow fishing at the back of the boat . Works out pretty good. A lot of times I just drag it behind the boat and catch more than he does.
    Great video Randy.
    😎👍

  12. Bulging disk, arthritis, eyes. Key is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Exercise outside of fishing. Resistance training, diet. You make adjustments and take care of urself so you can enjoy ur passions in life ! I'm a power fisherman at 58 yrs young and I feel the arthritis in my fingers daily. Keep doin what u love !

  13. 53 I had to dig up all my right handed reels and switch them for my lefties after developing tendinitis in my right elbow. 2 weeks of a jig bite and my right elbow is shot.

  14. With age usually comes wisdom. That wisdom comes in the form of not buying into all the hype surrounding the "bait of the day", understanding that locating fish is what matters, not what bait you use, realizing you don't need to be on the water at 5am, and most importantly only fish during the week when the pressure is the least. Of course learning to exploit technology to your advantage is another bit of wisdom that comes with age and not simply buying into YT hype …

  15. I'm 62 and like you will turn 63 next month. The hard truth is that the time comes when you can no longer physically do the things you took for granted as a younger person. I love to creek fish from the bank but normally it entails wading through the water, current, rocks, etc. I still do it but I dread the dread the day when I won't be able to fish that way anymore.

  16. I have a good buddy who fished with me but works a hard physical job, and he’s slowed down a lot the last few years. I had a job that was a nice mix of sitting and moving. Got a desk job, now I have to stretch often or I get sore fishing. Just have to keep these things in mind as a young man! You don’t want to have to grind every day or be a bookworm at a desk if you can help it.

  17. I noticed in our local bass club, the older anglers tend to drag worm, jigs, and carolina rigs. These same older anglers do very well in the yearly championship points race.

I am 64, I feel like I am fishing better than at any time in my life. I like all the power techniques, but seem to not be able to go for several days end to end fishing this way.

To be a real good competitive boater/pro, you need lots of stamina and quick reflexes to get the most out of your fishing day. Thats where age becomes the factor.

Older anglers make great Co-anglers and even teammates in tournaments. These older anglers provide a skill that the younger anglers miss.

  18. Im not 50 yet, im 41, but i do have shoulder and back injuries. I have recently became aware of the importance of a balanced rod. Flipping with a rod that wants to go tip down is not easy for me. Ive started to build rods that are technique specific with more, less or no weight added to the butt. You can go with ultra light or normal weighted guides to add or take away weight from the tip. Ive also learned that slightly shortening the length of my handle helps me out and will also shift the balance point. Anything to stay a few more hours fishing.

  19. Good video. I'm 64 and definitely a power fisherman but I'm trying to learn other techniques like drop shotting, etc. Not because I'm physically slowing down but because I want to expand my repertoire to catch fish more consistently. I also am expanding my fishing interests to include flyfishing for trout in the Rockies and inshore saltwater fishing along the Gulf. Getting older doesn't mean you have to slow down or fish less but you do need to take care of your body. Eat well, exercise, get good sleep and fish, fish, fish.

  20. 72 years old. Still fish daylight to dark. Stand all day long while fishing. I guess fishing is a lot easier if fishing is a passion and not just a hobby or just something else to do. PS, there is nothing better than time on the water. Each day is a challenge, a brand new puzzle that needs to be put together to complete the task at hand..

  21. The environmental changes affect older people more than younger people. I don't think I need to address the physical changes that also occur, some have to do with abilities to perform and some have to do with availability to be on the water. There are other things in life that can take priority over fishing time also. I can get in and out of the boat ok but I have a metal knee now and I kinda need the steps, or a partner to help launch and get back on the trailer.

  22. My partner (74) and myself (65) are about to enjoy another club championship this year. We have the ability to do all of the things needed to catch fish, but it is like anything else that comes with age. You need to focus on your strengths and know that there are limits as to how long you can throw an A-rig or deep running crank. Our strongest competition is two brothers in their twenties. Man, they are strong and tough. Oh to be 25 again…..

  23. I didn't fish tournaments a lot in my youth-I was focused on my education and career. Now I am 60 and am making up for lost time and am in the learning and expanding my depth of knowledge. One thing I did was to get signed up for the mail-order fishing tactic package kits- like Monsterbass/Karl's , etc. Once I had a new type of lure in my hand from these kits, I fished them- and learned. I would not have bought them on my own, otherwise. I have also learned the kayak bass fishing scene and that has helped my fishing tremendously compared to bass boat fishing I focused on before and fished with other good anglers. Like Rich Tauber once said- "if you only fish with trash, you will always be trash" (a trash fisherman). Now I am earning some checks!

  24. This is great advice. We all realize this, but we try to believe that we have to change just yet. I've slowed down in increments. Just a little each year. Thanks. Be blessed. My friend.

  25. Fishing sunglasses and vision issues.

Turn your favorite fishing sunglasses into bifocal reading glasses. Stick-on reading glasses lens really works well. They are plastic u-shaped lenses that you wet, place on the inside of your sunglasses lenses, let dry, and the stick-ons will stay in place. If you want to remove them, wet the lenses well and they will slide off. Sometimes my sunglasses are not that tall, so I will cut the bottom off the stick-on lenses to fit properly. Hope this helps my fellow seasoned anglers.

  26. I’m 61, I know it’s not cool, but I put my pedestal seats in. With the seats in I can usually last until 1or 2 o’clock. Of course if they are really hitting I’ll last longer.

  27. Gotta mix some motocross with the off-fishing days so you don’t get old, fat, weak, and lose that overall sharpness and desire to win.
Probably bad advice for most. I’m just old and extreme, rather than extremely old.

  28. Great video Randy, I'm 62 and I can relate. I'm a big Texas rig fisherman the top majority of the Fish I catch is on a lizard, that is my go too bait. 👍

  29. Thanks Randy, I’ve found that livescoping is much easier to do when you’re older than deep cranking or walking a topwater. I think as I get older I’ll do more of that. 😂
