Southern California’s fall bite continues to make history.

Quality yellowtail and white seabass are hanging around inshore, while offshore anglers are finding a much better grade of yellowfin tuna in the 40- to 60-pound class, with standouts pushing close to 100 pounds—and the local wahoo bite has reached another level.

This incredible El Niño season has also produced two monster catches: a 650-pound bluefin tuna aboard the Rail Time, one of the largest rod-and-reel bluefin ever documented in California waters, and an incredible 108-pound wahoo caught locally aboard The Only Child, setting a new benchmark for wahoo caught off California.

For the Tip of the Week, we break down how to build a proper Southern California wahoo and marlin trolling spread. We cover our productive lure choices, how far back to run each bait, trolling speeds, and how to position your spread to give yourself a better shot at catching that local ’hoo—or getting a striped marlin to climb on.

If you’re heading offshore right now, be ready for anything. This has become one of the most unique Southern California fishing seasons we’ve seen in years.
