I’d love for someone to show me a bait casting reel in 4:7:1.
The fastest reel I own is a 6.4:1 gear ratio. I feel no need for anything faster. In fact, most of my reels are around 30 years old and have gear ratios in the 5.3:1 range. For crankbaits, especially deep divers, I use older round bodied Ambassadeur reels. The larger spool diameter and handle make it a lot easier to handle the torque of the bigger baits. I'm too high-strung to use any faster reels because I could never retrieve them slow enough to be comfortable.
Actually the gear ratio is the number of times the spool turns per one turn of the handle. That does translate how much line is taken in but there is a variance because the less amount of line on the reel , the less is taken in and the more line on the reel, the more line is taken in. I agree too much of a big deal is made of the ratio, when there is actually just a small amount of difference in most cases.
I totally agree with you on the reel ratios making a difference. I'll stick with a 6:1 or a 7:1 and when I buy a new reel it'll depend on what the store has.
I agree.
THAT PUTTS A SMILE RIGHT ON ME, AS EVERYBODY THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY FOR USEING 7.1.1 DIAWA PROCASTER REELS WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT. I HAD A FLEET OF THEM,MY THINKING WAS, IS ALL I HAVE TO DO IS SLOW DOWN THE HANDLE AND I CAN FISH ANY BAIT! AND THATS WHAT I LEARNED TO DO. FINISH UP WITH THIS, FIRST, I WAS A CRANKBAIT FEIND, AND THAT GEAR RATIO ALLOWED ME TO STAY AT IT HARD ALL DAY! AND NO WAY I COULDA'VE DONE THAT WITHOUT 7.1.1 RETRIEVE! IT WAS MONEY!! AS NO ONE ELSE FROM SO.ILL. WAS DOING THAT, AND I WAS LEFT WIDE OPEN, AND HAD EVERY CRANKBAIT BANK AND PATTERN TO MYSELF! AND IF I FOUND THE ONE, AND BANK PATTERN, IT WAS ALL OVER!! A GOOD LIGHT, MED ACTION ROD, AND 7.1.1 BURNING IT AND STOPPING, REPEAT, IS MONEY GUYS!! AND I'M SHURE RANDY WILL TELL YOU THE SAME THING! RANDY AND I WERE SPONSERED AT THE SAME TIME BACK IN THE EARLY 90'S BY LUNKER LURE IN SO.ILL. AND I JUST FIND IT IRONIC, WE WERE USEING THE SAME REELS AND DIDN'T KNOW THAT!! SO I WASN'T THE ONLY CRAZY ONE LOL LOL! 😎 SO.ILL
7 speed is the most versatile. Almost all mine are 7’s. I love my 8’s but moving baits suffer at that high gear ratio. 6’s are just fine.
6..3.1 for me
I still have all seven of the shimano bantam curados (greenies) that I bought in the late 90s. 5.4s and 6.3s gear ratios. Still do all I want them to do.
Hardly anyone i know or been around talking ratio. So many brands your 7.1 to my abu way way different. Everyone looks at line per turn
I have this unique ability. I can turn the handle faster or slower. OMG what a talent.
Yep. Totally agree with you and your view on this. 👍🇺🇸
Can you throw a 10 xd all day long with a 7.1?
Gotta agree, all mine are 7.5:1 to 8:1.
You are correct and wrong at the same time. Yes some people can. I am a person who can’t! No matter what I try. When cranking a crankbait l, spinner bait or buzz bait. I simply can’t slow my hand down. I can for a couple of turns of the handle. But once I start looking around and not focusing purely on my hand. I speed back up. So I need the reel to do the job for me!!
This makes a lot of sense. Good tip randy
Reel retrieve ratio is how many times the spool turns with one crank of the handle.
5.1 for cranking and 7.1 for everything else for me .
I’ve been using 3 8.1s and recently picked up a 6.1 I prefer to slow it down due to my muscle memory on them, returning the 6.1
Yeah, middle on the gear ratio. Most reels have some sort of issues from grindy bearings to broken thumb bar to handle locking to whatever, not to mention the low line capacity and other obvious things. All baitcasters need to go back to the drawing board, except perhaps that no-backlash reel.
I still have 5500c 5000 2500 . Best points are serval able buy replacement parts.spool em up go fishing 😊
6.3:1 daiwa tatula is my latest reel. Perfect ratio great reel
Thanks for that technical presentation. almost as bad as your fishfinder information 😂
The only thing I like is a 5.2 for big crankbaits that makes it much easier.
Couldn't agree more with you Randy. Have the same speed bait casters, and two different size spinning reels. I teach my friends to focus on line retrieval. Feel the line for changes and watch it in the water for changes, all while controlling the reel speed….
Inches per crank is a better measure for reeling speed. Gear ratio, number of spool revolutions per crank, is good to know. But that also depends on the spool size. The bigger the spool, with the line on it, the more line is reeled in. On a small reel, it's not going to reel as much line in with the same gear ratio. So it's good to know both. Gear ratio also effects how hard it is to crank, how much work it is going to be reeling all day. Higher ratios tend to have more tension. Just pick what feels right and learn how fast you need to reel to get each bait to retrieve at the speed you want it, depending on your presentation. It can be confusing picking up different reels and finding you have to crank faster or slower to get the same speed of retrieve as another reel. I tend to like somewhere between 6 and 7 these days. Back in the day reels and spools were larger, so a 4.7 ratio wasn't as slow as it sounds compared to today's reels.
It’s just fun dialing in a setup for your favorite technique. But yeah if you’re on a budget definitely don’t get sucked into that stuff 🤘🏽😆♥️
I've used a 6.2-1 for now on 30 yrs. and i can fish most anything in my tackle box, also use a 5.7-1 spinning reel for the lighter stuff.
Thanks.
It’s not primarily a marketing tactic. The variety and range is exactly what you (we) asked for. And the selection can be paired with the specific length/action rods that we also asked for. Do all reels need flipping switches? No. But if you use the same setup to bottom bounce for walleye as you do to flip/pitch, I guarantee you’ll want that feature on your Lews speed spool if only to use it for walleye.
I remember when the 6.3’s came out- speed demons lol😂
Loving my RB3ss
I'm not a pro but I've mainly either used a 2:1 or a 5.2:1 most of my life
I've done what he said. Either burn the reel or baby crank it. Thanks
I agree 100% I have a 6.4 and a 7.0
If i could have 1 baitcast reel..7:1:1 abu garcia, 7' medium/heavy rod, and 17 or 20 lb. Monofilament if 1 setup was allowed
I think that gear ratios are like shoes. What fits me and feels good may not work for you. I like reels in the 6's and 7's because I power fish 80% of the time. But a guy who cranks or pitches and flips most of the time may like a different fit than me. Find one or two that fits your style of fishing and and roll with it. Thanks for the video Randy!
Now that everybody paid 5k for their spotlight tech, the industry needs to sell them 10k in ultralight rods and reels to catch the beat up fish.
I use one 8.3:1 and the rest are 7.5:1 and they cover everything I need.
Great view points!
I agree that a 7 speed is the most versatile, and sometimes the ratio numbers are misleading! I have one 8.0:1 reel but the IPT is only an inch or two more than my 7:1 reels. I may get a 6.3:1 at some point, but that's it
Most of my reels are Lews 7.5:1 speed. I have a couple Shimano that are 7.2:1. One of my Lews is the super duty which is 6.5:1. That’s as slow as I have. I really don’t worry about reel speeds unless I am specifically doing speed cranking.
I use the basic Lews Classic Speed Speed Spool. It is a workhorse and if you know how to cast it will make all the casts. I did recently get a lower gear ratio Lews but haven’t used it yet.
Geting "picky, picky, picky, down to a fine tooth comb" is what most all of your advice on lures, rubbing soft baits, types of dyes, etc. I use different reel ratios so I don't have to change my "natural" reel speed. To each their own though.
Thanks for this
I didn’t know
What each person needs is subjective. I agree that a person doesn’t need 5 different reel ratios. Do what makes ya comfortable. I use 7.1.1 on all baits worked with the rod and 6.3.1 on all baits worked with the reel. I keep it simple. I’ve found I can’t slow myself down on baits worked with the reel when I get excited, which is every time I go fishing, so I use the slower reels for those baits.
Every reel I own is 7:1. except one of my my flipping rods is 9:1.
Agree . . . good stuff.
Lews already ruined the BB-1 pro. Canceled the 5.1:1 with loose anti reverse. Luckily stocked up
Great advice! Much appreciated!
I agree 6 ratio is all that’s needed. I bought 3 super high sped reels they never go in my boat.
