Cowan Lake Bass Fishing- Went Way Back In The Lotus Pads For This Tournament

Cowan Lake was one of the first places I ever fished in Ohio and my recent poor results there have frustrated me since I basically learned to kayak fish on the lake. So for this Cincinnati Kayak Fishing tournament I decided to try something a little different and go up Wilson Creek which is the tiny creek that feeds into the cove by the Campground boat ramp. Well, my decision not to pre-fish Cowan really hurt me because the lotus pads were almost impenetrable since the park hadn’t cut the “paddle paths” into the field that they usually make for boats to explore. I wasted over 2 hours trying to get through the pads and then back out, and was then in a mad scramble to try and get at least one fish so I could get at least one AOY point out of this trail stop.

I ended up finding 5 little ones on a weightless Senko (and I mean really little, CKF rules allow photos of 8″ and above bass), 2 of which escaped on the jump. I really thought I had good hooksets on both of them so it was confusing why I lost them. After editing this video, I am wondering if I am trying to hookset so hard that I am making holes in the tiny lips that allow the hook to slip out when they jump. Does that sound plausible? It is also possible I let off pressure on the fish on the jump because they were so little it was difficult to pull against them which allowed the hook to come out. Since I usually don’t get that many fish to bite (yet), I can’t be letting any escape!
