Side imaging is one of these most misunderstood aspects of fish finders among new bass fisherman. In this video, I break down exactly how to interpret the side imaging view on your graph. I also explain how to know where objects that appear on your screen are in relation to your boat. Hope you enjoy!

Geometry and algorithms aside, I've always been told not to run your transducer out of water as it will generate enough internal heat over time to cook itself. Anybody know if this is still true…or if it ever was?
This was such a good explanations. Im assuming if you are in a kayak you can just back pedal or paddle so that the brush pile is back on top of your screen right?
This is one of the all time BEST explanations I’ve ever seen! Huge help, thank you.
Aren't the distances on screen representative of distance from the transducer to the object? As far as I've understood, something that's 10 m deep and 10 m to the right would show up around the 14 m mark as it's 14.14… m away from the transducer. I think the distance from transducer is called "slant range" and that's what's usually displayed on plotters.
What if ure in 500 ft deep water, how do you minus 500 from 80 feet screen coverage?
You are a gifted teacher! Thanks!
If you've come to get a quicker lesson.. minus the depth from the range of the object and that's how far it really is.
At this point I got 2 fish finders for Decoration to look like I know how to read it ..every time I think I got it ill come across a video explaining it differently..mind is blown ..bout to give up and just FIS like a always ha e and cast and cast and cast and hope for the best 🤷♂️ 😂
Thumbs up, must!
I’m looking to upgrade my garmin cv ffinder this is excellent information! Thanks and you have a new subscriber
Another great value for me is watch again and again
Another helpful video for me to watch and rewatch again and again. Thank you.
"Don't wanna beat a dead horse" proceeds to beat a dead horse 😅
Great video, I now know how to read side imaging!
Great video!
I’m new to using and trying to understand what my fish finder is trying to show me. Thank you for the explanation. I have a lot to learn.
Fantastic explanation! Thank you!
So the basket being 14’ straight to the side of the boat would show on the graph as 15.5’ out to the side to account for the 1.5’ depth right? Because the distance scale at the bottom of the screen counts the depth too. Is that right?
Brush being shown 30’ to the right when in 10’ of water is only 20’ out?
It is very easy to operate and also to install on kayak
Thanks for the video. I fly fish for trout out of a frameless pontoon boat with a Humminbird 698si. I set my range at about 30’ thinking I would be able to see structure close to my boat clearer. After watching this and a couple other videos you have done I have to go change some settings on my fish finder. I am thinking of upgrading to a helix5 with AutoChart, I think the mapping would be very handy.
Great explanation!
Awesome video young man!
Just want to note that you totally screwed up the "distance to the basket" by repeating over and over and over again that it was 14 feet + 1 1/2 ft from the transducer… I kept trying to figure that out since it doesn't measure to each and every object it pins… what you can maybe figure out is if you are scanning out, say 40ft, is the image closer or further out from the bottom black zone… so if you're in like 10ft of water and the image is halfway between the black and the edge of the scale, then the image would be aprox 15 feet from your boat.
Can't explain it any better! Thanks
Very well explained. Question though, if these units have GPS then why not scale out the vertical axis by distance traveled instead of time? Can you sync up the image polling interval to match your speed so you have a "to scale" map? So that on the screen the two axis are 1:1 or 2:1 or some other ratio that is to scale?
So if your water depth is 15ft and your brush pile is showing up 20ft to the right, you have to cast 35ft to the right of your boat to hit that spot? Or just 20ft?? Thanks
Engineers forgot that not all anglers are engineers.
Or they tried to give the fish a chance?
Clear info. Thank you
DaveD wrote a theory that I also I'm going to comment on. There has to be a cone shooting down from the transducer let's say in 30 ft of water and the image's. start showing bottom at thirty feet to the left and 30 ft to the right therefore you do not see 60 ft of bottom under the boat so if there was a 6ft round Rock directly under the transducer you would not see it. If it were shooting straight down from the transducer into the sides you would not see that black water area also when you're looking at the screen set for 60 ft to each side it shows 30 ft of black and 30ft of bottom……. Prove us wrong!!!
Where are the fish ( where would they be ) and what would they look like?
Already lost at 3min in lol😂
Wish I had seen this years ago. Thank you SOOOOO much brother. I ran across you videos many times before but never watched on due to one word. "OFFSHORE" Not sure where you are from but Here in east Tx and West La, we have lakes, marshes and "offshore" is out in the Gulf, (Saltwater). Just my feed back. Now that I've found you, I'll dig through a lot more. Thanks again. DS
Thank You what a fantastic explanation and illustration. Looking forward to seeing more.
I throw buoys. Super easy. Soon as a cool spot shows up in tossing right on it
