Why a ChatterBait Excels
One reason Dumke relies so heavily on a ChatterBait comes down to versatility. He can slow roll it over shallow grass, burn it across flats, or crawl it through transition areas where bass group together before and after the spawn. A ChatterBait also allows Dumke to cover water quickly. Points leading into shallow bays, grass flats, and warming water all create ideal conditions for active fish.
ChatterBait Setup and Retrieve
Dumke throws a 3/8-ounce ChatterBait paired with a soft plastic trailer. That setup helps him keep the bait above shallow grass while maintaining a slow and steady retrieve. A medium-heavy rod with a softer, parabolic bend helps keep fish pinned during the fight. The softer action prevents anglers from pulling the bait away too quickly. Dumke pairs the setup with a faster reel to help manage line quickly while still maintaining slower retrieves when necessary.
