I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Speaking of good mats here in the Northeast we have huge mats of water chestnut. I’ve literally never caught a fish out of one in all my years of fishing. I’ve just assumed if it’s only water chestnut growing it’s dead water. What’s you opinion about water chestnuts ?

Great info. Check out recent video on BassFishingHQ regarding research on bass movements during the year. Pretty interesting, half the bass out there are not where we tell them they should be 🙂.

I go with 4-5 straind braid for punching. Also agree time of year is important to what mat they go to.

The best! Punching and flipping are far and away my favorite techniques.
Oh boy punching is awesome, I caught an 8 and so many good ones this summer on it. It’s much more technique oriented than one would think.
🍺Good stuff Matt. I like to throw a chatterbait/spinnerbait every once in awhile out in front of where I’m going to flip/punch for ONE cast ONLY. I believe this pulls/entices the active/hungry/curious fish closer to the mat edge which in turn makes them a little easier to catch a short time later when you flip/punch that area.
If you catch a bonus fish while attempting to pre-entice them I suggest you stick with it for more than that I cast.👍
