Catch Bigger Panfish with These Two Systems

In this video, we talk about targeting big red ear sunfish and coppernose bluegill on ultralight gear as well as fly fishing gear. You can keep your setups pretty simple, using a good ultralight rod and reel and 2-pound monofilament line and fish small 1/64 to 1/16-ounce jigs. Or you can opt for a fly rod and use a floating hopper and drop a small jig under it like a Mini Magnet.

I often bounce around between both techniques to give the bigger panfish a lot of different looks until I find something they will react to. That’s most of the game–getting them to react. That’s either in how you work the lures or how you present them. And sometimes, even what they look like. So I tie a variety of bluegill flies and bugs with different materials to give me a lot of options to trigger fish. I also like the hopper dropper option on a fly rod when they are pretty shallow and spooky. Even talk a little about the Coike (full video on that for panfish next week).
