Bryan Thrift's MUST-HAVE Lure For Tough Conditions & Pressured Bass

Are you tired of bass not biting your baits? Brian Thrift here! Let’s talk about a must-have for tough fishing days, the micro football jig. When bass are picky, this finesse jig puts fish in the boat. It’s smaller than traditional jigs, perfect for pressured waters and triggering bites in tough conditions.

I use the Fitzgerald Signature Series Micro Football Jig in 3/8, 1/2, or 3/4 oz sizes. It’s hand-tied with finesse silicone rubber, a light weed guard, and a Mustad light-wire hook. Pair it with a 3-inch Damiki Air Craw for finesse scenarios, especially in pressured spots where larger jigs won’t get bit.

The right rod is key. The Fitzgerald 7’3” medium-action Micro Jig Rod. Its softer tip works with lighter 10-12 lb P-Line Tactical Fluorocarbon fishing line to prevent breaks. This micro jig rod casts a country mile and keeps fish pinned, even in deep water.

For reels, I use the Abu Garcia Revo STX with a 7.3:1 gear ratio. It picks up line quickly, but not too fast.
To fish the micro jig effectively and catch lots of wary bass, drag the jig slowly, feeling for structure, and pop it occasionally to mimic fleeing crawfish.

The Damiki Air Craw trailer is compact and lifelike, with natural colors for clear water and darker shades for stained water. To maximize bass bites, adjust colors to match local forage like shad or bluegill.

This finesse jig excels in clear water, high sun, and heavy pressure, especially over rocky or clay bottoms in 20-30 feet of water. Slow drags with occasional hops near structure often trigger strikes from bass that aren’t actively feeding, or are in a negative mood.

Give the Fitzgerald Micro Jig and Damiki Air Craw combo a try. It’s a proven, fun technique that’s sure to help you catch more and bigger bass.

  1. The jig is now the only lure in my bass fishing arsenal that I've never caught a bass with, and it's not like I haven't tried. I fish a jig every time I'm out fishing, and I use just about every method that the plethora of YouTube content creators share in their videos.
Do you use any kind of fish attractant scents on your jigs?
I've had other popular baits that I'd never caught fish with before then out of the blue I suddenly got bit for the first time. It's crazy but, after that first bite, now all of the sudden I seem to l get bites on those previously ineffective baits on a regular basis. I can't explain how or why that happens. I must have just been holding my mouth the wrong way before I got that first bite.
I'm still not there yet with a jig though. Hopefully things will change sooner rather than later.

  2. Thanx Bryan. Just ordered some more finesse jigs. I'll give yours a try next order. I like throwing jigs because of the simplicity of the lure. No Tungsten weight to peg or not. What plastic, worm, craw or creature? Jigs are simple., only real decision is Arky or football head.
