  1. Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

  2. I started with an expensive Shimano bait casting reel as a newbie because that is what pros use, for me it was a big mistake, I spent a lot of time fixing "bird nests" urrrggg! The more I pull on the nest the worst it tightens, it was not a good idea for ME to start with that as a rookie. It got worse when I tried to replace the line with a different pound test line yet another cluster F. If you ever want to discourage your wife's newbie relatives from ever bugging you again to go bass fishing, let them use a bait casting combo the first time, they'll never ask again lol

  3. As a Saltwater fisherman, I use bait casters all the time. when your casting using the bait caster. Please keep your finger on the line. It will save you time. Especially when your line is out and it gets hit while you have a massive birds nest in the reel.

  4. I totally disagree with getting a bait caster as a beginner. I would recommend a spinning setup for a beginner. Yes, you can buy combos for $20-30 at Walmart and places, but I would recommend saving a bit more and buying a much better quality spinning combo in the $60-80 range. I personally recommend a Pfluger President combo. You can usually find a Pfluger reel and Cabela's or Bass Pro rod combo for around $60-70 and it is a combo you can use for multiple different species (everything from panfish, walleye, bass, and even catfish) and will last you for years.

The idea of spending $200 on a combo for a beginner is flat out stupid. I've been fishing for years, and never spent more than $80 on a combo. Buy a decent combo, and save the money to buy different lures.
