Anybody that says he's setting the hook too hard clearly doesn't bass fish. I absolutely blow the hookset up while frog fishing. I had a buddy have a reel blow up in his hand once from a hookset

I suck at top water baits besides buzz bait have luck once in awhile I love the wacky rig nail them all the time trying to get tips to get it to work but seems to me I'm doing it right who knows
