The whopper plopper is a favorite top water bass fishing lure. This particular whopper plopper is the smallest that money can buy, at 75 mm.
On this fishing adventure, I head out early in the morning after a nice cool night in early September. We’ve had some cooler temps the past few days/nights here in central NC, and the bass fishing will start warming up as bass don’t have to stay deep to be comfortable.
I had numerous bites on this little whopper plopper and managed to land a few fish before it got too hot. I also met a cool kid named Asher who has already had some bass fishing luck on this very lake.
My advice for bass fishing the whopper plopper is as follows:
1) Low-light conditions are typically best for topwater bass fishing, so early morning and late evening.
2) You might be surprised how many bass will strike right next to the bank while topwater fishing during these hours, so don’t be afraid to cast very shallow and retrieve your whopper plopper right along the water’s edge.
3) Sometimes largemouth bass will strike a stop-and-go retrieve, while other times they’re more likely to strike a constant retrieve. It’s best to experiment with a few different retrievals to see what the fish want.
Here’s a video of me fishing with my kids at this exact lake where we caught some really nice sunfish:

Thanks for joining me for this topwater whopper plopper bass fishing adventure! If you’re in central NC, maybe we’ll run into each other (not literally lol) like Asher and I did.
