Bass Fishing Mosquito Lake with Ohio Kayak Fishing

This weekend I went up to Mosquito Lake to fish a bass tournament with Ohio Kayak Fishing. Our group always camps at Mosquito Lake State Park Campground and this time we were surprised to find that the campground had scheduled Trick-Or-Treat for this early October weekend, so that was different and fun.

I had one day to pre-fish out on Mosquito but as it has been going this year my electronics didn’t work…this time due to rodent damage on the transducer cord. So pre-fishing was less productive than I had hoped, but any time on the water is good!

On tournament day my biggest goal was to cover water and keep switching up lures until I found fish and not to get stuck in one place or with one lure. From history I knew that the bass on Mosquito like to live in the shallow grass, so I focused on areas that I could see grass, started with topwater, then chatterbait, then a stealth chatterbait which got me my first 2 fish. When that bite died I found a cove with a huge amount of bait fish and threw a weightless fluke which got me my next 3 keepers. When those fish stopped biting I moved again and found a place that looked perfect to dropshot and caught my last 3 but only one was a keeper.

It is such a treat to fish a lake that I am building history on after all these years where I had to just show up at lakes I had never seen before compete, now I just need to figure out how to turn that history into wins!

  1. I have a lynx here in Australia. I had a similar issue with my Garmin as you. My transducer cover got a heap of rocks/,sand in it. When I got it all out it went back to working great. My Garmin would only work if it was deeper than 5m. Well done on the fish
