Bass Fishing: How To Catch Bass On Tough Days

Eat! Eat! Eat! Food is all that bass are thinking about in the Late Fall! These creatures know the cold season is coming and they waste no time filling their reserves with anything that passes in front of them. This time of year an angler can gain a ton of confidence in new lures by targeting bass that are anxious to feed. Need to learn how to catch bass on crankbaits, swimbait, jigs, etc? No problem! It all sounds wonderful until they shut down. All of a sudden you can’t get a bite, no one can, so what do you do now?

Today Tim breaks down his approach to catching bass that are shut down. Anyone can get a bite when the fish are chasing but knowing when its time to stop and adapt can be the difference between a great day and a frustrating outing. Knowing when to downsize to a dropshot, Neko rig, or other finesse bait is an art all its own. Tim explains the signs you need to keep an eye out for and follows it up with tackle recommendations.

Below is a breakdown of the tackle that Tim uses during tough conditions. When the fish turn negative, fish with confidence, knowing that you’ve adapted at the right time. The bass are still there and with a little persistence you can salvage your day on the water.

  1. Great vid, Matt. You two guys just keep rockin'. I tried one of your recommendations, but it didn't work. So, I think I'll stick with the "TRDs", as opposed to the "other" suggestion. They stay on the hook a lot better. Hah.

  2. Great video TY anybody arnd Raleigh NC gotta EZ OB motor hauler (wheeled) holds up 2- 20 HP OB selling for 50% new price hadda sell my OB due 2 my Military injuries & upcomping surgery. used it on rental jon boats now justa bank yanker sadly ;(

  3. Great video, i take alot of this for perch fishing myself. I gotta ask, about downsizing for dropshotting, how about if its really muddy water so it's harder for the fish to see the bai, still downsize preferable? And what about colors in muddy waters for dropshotting say 20 feet?

  4. im on the banks and right now is the crap time to fish.. its such a grind here at Castaic lake California.. sure it has record fish.. and im sure there is one or two big records still in the lake.. but good luck finding one.. and even good luck catching dinks and a lil better.. I get burnt out here… ya we got shad.. and lots of shad.. im pretty sure that's why even during spawn ect I rarely see largemouth boil.. ya they will do it but you can tell this is pressured lake and the fish here are not like elsewhere. I feel lucky I can fish this lake of course maybe I can catch a 12lb which I am trying for.. but at same time I wish I was at easier area even if the fish couldn't be records…this lake though. always rising aNd falling has literally no foilage really at all in or near the water except dead shit.. no trees near water maybe a few but so super random.. if the water is even up high enough near it anyways .. I haven't fished here enough this lake though you need to know the bottom and without a boat and fish finder its a pain. and since its a man made lake in the mountains basically.. daming the water for drinking.. dragging bottom is like fishermans worst nightmare can literally snag lose snag lose snag lose snag lose.. it also gets deep really fast here so most the time you cant see fish.. I have sight fished a few times here though and of course its fun and I actually caught fish a lot easier then when I cant.. so it helped me learn but ya.. so much easier when know there is fish there ect.. compared to blindly casting from banks. I think I need to go back to take one pole and move a lot.. I was doing good like that.. but then I started taking 2 poles and trying to bait and wait just incase I got another bite.. because even with 1 pole and covering lots of water I would still get the skunk.. a couple summers ago I went every night for 3-4 hours for a month straight avg to 1 fish a night.. but still skunked and had multiple catches some nights.. its just hard here.. but ya it was funny when I did that a couple other guys were out there a lot too.. and on a full moon night we all caught 5 lbers.. all within like 30 min of each other. fishing here is like work though so I think I get burnt out here doing it from the banks and not catching.

  5. Fall fishing is pretty tough for us shore anglers. Where I live at my local lake, there a lot of grass submerged close around the shore. The vegetation are dying. Sometime when I see blow up around that area, I throw topwater, working it slowing, and I have no luck with it. When I start throwing shad-size swimbaits and square bill crankbaits, it start to produce some bite at low speed. But, not the quality fish that I see blow up… I just wondering if y'all can help make a video catching Fall Big Bass in the grass from the shore…

  6. Can you give us people on the east coast tips on early winter fishing for bass and what to throw is these very cold water temps. Talking 35 degrees
Outside and we don’t have shad our here like you guys do

  7. What is typically considered a tough day for you guys @tacticalbassin Today I caught 3 small largemouth fish within 4 hours of fishing. Just curious if I should have applied these "slow" techniques or not

  8. Great videos gents. I fish in the Cape Fear River system in NC that is affected by the tide. The river even reverses direction twice daily and flows for miles upriver. Most of the baits I use on lakes don't seem to work or can't be used because of the current. Do you have any recommendations?

  9. When you talk about seasonal fishing can you mention what water temp triggers it? I am guessing New England is a full season off of Cali. Also, how about lakes with no shad? Thanks guys your videos are the best!

  10. You guys should try the megabass I-Slide 262 it is a great bait that can trigger some giant bites especially in the fall it’s is defiantly not cheep but it is worth it for the money Hasu is my favorite color with some 2/O owner hooks and split rings

  11. Great video guys, its time to downsize the kind of water, pelase do something into a small lake how to find fish into a small area, how they feed, how they move, anything important about it…

  12. I would love to get your take and feedback on tackle storage for the winter to make sure that everything is good to go and rust free coming spring time. Thanks again for the content. It is excellent.

  13. I would like to see just more of you guys targeting big bass in deep reservoirs. I know how hard it is to catch bigguns, but it sure is entertaining to watch. You guys are great. Keep it going.

  14. Love the winter tips, one suggested watching your videos when things are slow, I do just that and invite My good friend, J ack, that is Jack Daniels while watching! I'm a smallie Junkie are the same ones you are suggesting mostly for largies and spots or good for smallies also! I just bought blades and cicadas for real deep fish and wondering if all this will be effective in Trinity Lake, it's deep, clear, and will be cold very soon!
