Bass Fishing for Beginners: How to Spool YOUR Baitcaster (2018)

The “Bass Fishing for Beginners” series continues with a look at: How to Spool a Baitcasting Reel. I’ll discuss some of the DO’S and DON’TS that I’ve learned along the way for: tying a knot to the spool, understanding how much line to add, and how to tie a connection knot with backing.

I know there are many different ways to do this. I appreciate all of the positive feedback and I encourage you to leave any tips that you may have below for fellow anglers spooling up their first baitcasting reel. Thanks for watching! 1. I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

  2. Knot directly to the holes on the spool with braid ended up with snapped line for me. Luckily it wasn’t during fishing but when I was about to unspool it.

  3. My friend just bought a baitcaster, this will be the video I'll be sending him to put the line on his reel with the caveat that he should tie directly to the spool holes for the all braided line setup. I've tied 30 to 50lb braid directly to the spool holes and I've never had issues with slippage, only a couple of times when I had a bigger fish did I have the braid sort of dig in to itself…its got sort of a spongy action when you wrap all braid…so you may have to pull the line back out of itself a little and reel it back to reseat it properly again, but not all that big of deal. Rather have all braid in case something happens or that first portion of the line reached its usable limit, less wrapping line on the reel means more fishing….especially if I have to break from fishing to put more braid on backing….well that a major problem cause I'm not fishing. Great video!

  4. I don’t tie my line directly to my spool because the inside of those holes on the spool are sharp because they are unable to deburr them. This has cut my line in the past. I might just have bad luck

  5. Is that your custom reel , because it has an almost Identical everything to the older bass pro shops tourney special, ya know the red one. Which was my first baitcaster in fact.

  6. 7. i take advantage of those holes, use uni knot and a half hitch knot to lock in place then shift the knot so its flushed with the hole. no problem with it.

  8. Piscifun baitcast reel has a tiny recessed to tie line, I haven’t found a video to show how to tie line to the tiny knob on reel , any suggestions.
