Bass Are Crushing Bluegill-Shaped Baits Right Now — It’s NOT the Color

You can own two bluegill baits with nearly identical paint, and one gets followed and refused all day while the other gets crushed. The difference usually isn’t the color.

This is about what a bass is actually reading at four feet down and forty feet away, and why the tackle wall is organized around the one variable that matters least.

Most of us optimize bluegill bait color long before checking what comes first: body depth, posture, movement and fall behavior. Here’s why a 4-inch bluegill profile and a 4-inch minnow are not the same size to a bass, why “more action” can make your bait look less like a panfish, and why one stalk of grass does something to your lure your hands can’t fake.
