Bank Fishing River Smallmouth Bass With Swimbaits

Swimbaits are often fished on jigheads or weighted worm hooks as a deeper presentation but W2F staff McKeon Roberts shares why he chooses to rig swimbait style plastics texposed and weightless around current. The broad body of the plastic catches the current and its natural bouancy paired with only a 3/0 worm hook allows it to act much like a natural dead or dying baitfish would. Bass sit and wait in areas of current where potential food items are pushed to them. Presenting your bait in these areas correctly results in many more bites, especially in shallow water near shore.

  1. Nice beautiful fish and rivers… always looking for a weedless options for weedy shallow smallmouth rivers ….I do river walking all Summer Long for Smallies….What size swimbait do you use with the 3/0 hook in the video? 3 Inch? 4inch. Good video 👍

  2. i could tell it was weightless as soon as i seen that cast haha, i cant believe how much action he puts on it while working the swimbait, im surprised it doesnt come shooting out of the shallow water haha but clearly it works and ive gotta try it. i go weightless all the time with my soft plastics, it gets great action and a slow fall rate, but i use 1/0 around me

  3. A one pound smallmouth will fight harder than a 5 pound largemouth. I had a lot of fun when I was a teenager catching smallmouths. But this fella is catching some "hawgs"! Nice!

  4. It's nice to see someone fishing off the bank i too fish a river but there are muskies in it so you have to use a heaver outfit medium heavy seames to work well i mostly fish a swim bait but every once in a while you will have hit youre line there are olso walleyes in the same river they also hit swim baits anywho love your video!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Those are some awesome catches. As a boatless weekend angler living near a river, I can't tell you how much it means to hear you talk about your tackle and your technique. You have a real knack for reading the water and for explaining it well. That pig at 3:42 looks absolutely KILLER. I also love the respect you show for the fish, everytime. Nice job out there!

  6. Glad to see someone else has learned the craft of river fishing like I do it. Everything you said is exactly how I do it. I’ve had buddies that would walk right past shoals, eddies, etc to get to a calm body of water and I’d lay back and bust their bubbles lol. If you ever wanna try something different they really love 3” yum dingers and tubes… just gotta let the current do the work. Beautiful fish at the end… I love when smallies have that dark, blackened look to them.

  7. Hi McKeon, back at it again eh? I don't blame you, I'd be camped out there! The water looks lower than the July 31 post of breaking down the eddies you did. Was this shot at the same time? You really read the water well. I've teased trout with worms like that, holding it above a snag and the resulting current break, then giving slack so it drifts under the snag, pull it back, repeat, BANG! Fish on! Did you "cut your fishing teeth" like that? Neat concept on those hooks, I went to their site, too bad they didn't button up on those smaller fish but that's fishing. But those trophies, beautiful! The rod seems what I've been looking for (who can stop with just one, like potato chips 😉 However I'm more "stealth" oriented so I don't care for the neon green. I'll have to see what else they offer. Thanks for another great intelligent and informative video, always a pleasure McKeon!
