Late summer to fall transitions for smallmouth bass
End of summer to late fall can be a hard time to catch bass. Smallmouth are starting to feed more but there are still schools of fish that haven’t made the push out deep yet. Today we went outside of Mille Lacs onto a local pond in Eastern MN so we could give you an example of how to catch fish on a smallmouth lake that sets up like most smallmouth lakes do in MN that may be closer to your house. While there was hard bottom and weediness (which we checked) like most lakes in MN the fish were more around sand patches with grass. If there was bait by them there was smallmouth as well. We targeted multiple depths with an open mind but ultimately went shallow. Fish were healthy and were actively feeding. If you can figure out what the bait was using you could find where smallmouth are on most lakes!
