Soft plastic grubs (aka twister tails) are proven and versatile baits for bass, panfish, walleye, and striper, to name a few but have been overshadowed by paddle tail swimbaits the last several years. Wired2Fish’s Kyle Peterson circles back on a classic and shares a highly effective weedless rigging method that turns ‘old school grubs’ into ‘new school’ topwater baits for shallow water bass relating to cover like grass, wood and cut banks.

A grub is stealthy yet has the drawing power of flash and vibration, especially when worked near the surface. High-sticking an unweighted grub wakes the bait across the surface — bass show themselves by boiling on the bait, which gives the options to speed up, slow down or pause the bait to trigger the bite. Peterson stresses the importance of choosing a quality hook with dual fluorocarbon weed guards. The weed guards act as a rudder to prevent the bait from spinning while also making it weedless.
This system works excellently when bank fishing or out of a boat, but stealth is critical to prevent spooking bass in shallow water. Kyle opted for a kayak to access this off the beaten path public lake. Efficient pedal drive systems help you cover water quickly and negotiate tight spaces with ease, all while staying whisper quiet.

Where can I find these I can only find the ones with on curl not double
I just love grubs. Some of the things I like about them are, they work on pretty much every species of fish, you can fish it in almost every way, lots of people don’t throw them so fish are typically not used to seeing them. And they are usually pretty dang cheap. Thanks for making this video, most people don’t fish these like you did here.
Love the grubs so cheap and deadly and easy to fish .
I use this on a jig head, and it’s absolute candy. I caught 5 bass today just by doing this. I might go out there again and use it
Love these for 7+ in spawn
I love my grubs!
Grubs, the OG swimbat! I was catching spots on grubs long before swimbaits became a thing.
I have a ton of these i need to use up. Perfect!
I have fished a MOGAMBO worm like this for 20 years, early summer this is great clear water pond bait.
what do you use for the hook?
Just landed my PB walleye this week on a yum
I use em the river to regulary take smallmouth, walleye and occasionally a musky,
Love fishing the grub. They are cheap to buy and can catch anything that swims.
We used to call it "grubbin' buzz" back in the 80s in Japan (Yamamoto single tail grub was huge there back then).
My uncle gave the same exact curly tails and I didn’t think much of them until I searched them up
Straight up hog… been using kalins for forever in different ways and they def kill it lol. 🐟💲
I caught 9 largies today with a yamamoto curly tail 🎣
Dang nice I'm going to try this.
Great explanation of the hook's weed guard preventing the line twist.
where are you fishing?
I haven't used grub's in sutch a long time I've forgotten just how deadly thay are and the sad part is I've got two tray's full of different colors just laying in my closet shame on me
Dude my dad would throw that exact bait when fish don’t bite and it works
For a large profile go for Zoom Fat Albert, for action go for Mr. Twister.
Hey Kyle: That VMC 2/0 hook you listed is a great choice, thanks. The VMC 7311 2/0 has also proven great to me in this application: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k62vr0mvantq72a/VMC%207311.jpeg
That is legit the biggest largemouth I've ever seen caught on a chartreuse grub.
Curly tail grubs have saved so many tournaments for me haha
I use to use Kalin grubs for fishing for saltwater bass in the harbors some years ago. May just have to swing by the tackle shop and grab some grubs for some LMB..Cool video..
Lovely video really enjoyed it the good old grub 👌
Nice vídeo 👊👏👏👏👍🎣💪
This is amazing but I feel so bad you just shared that for the world to use now!
Definitely going to have to try this. Looks like a good technique for some of the pressured waters we have in the DFW area
You betcha!!👊💥
Great vid. I also love grubs for early season bass. The weed guard is a nice touch when the conditions are sloppy or there are a lot of floaters/lily pads. Have you ever used a 2/0 or 3/0 EWG hook attached to a juicy grub? They spin a little more than your rig, but they are still tempting for lunkers lurking in the shallows, esp if you are sleuthing in a kayak. Super fun!
Wired to fish videos are the most efficient, yet thoroughly explained how to fish vids on YouTube. Well done, thank you for dropping knowledge.
Always enjoy your vids.
Looks like a great bait for early Spring fishing. I usually use a Grub as a Trailer on a Spinner Bait.
Thanks Again for the Video Guys.
What size Neko hook for that Swim N Grub?
For better results try that rig as a mule rig…
Man, I haven't fished a plastic grub in a good while! Might have to go back to them for a trial run!
Looks like those panfish like to take the tails with the amount on the bottom of the kayak. Awesome video I'm going to have to give it a try in my kayak
wow those are nice ones
Seriously, the curly tail grub may be the most ubiquitous bait, but may also be the MOST UNDERRATED BAIT for bass! Fantastic video!!!🎣
Love the grub. Zoom Fat Albert green pumpkin fished Texas rig EWG hook wieghtless. It glides thru the water and looks much like a bait fish in my area of SC.
Cool video guys. While paddle tails are the rage here in Door County, WI for big smallmouths, the traditional 4 to 5 inch twister tail still works great. They really do produce in a variety of conditions and locations. Most of the videos I do here on Green Bay and Lake Michigan deal with clearer and more open water, so its cool to see how well the grubs in a totally different environment. Keep up the good work.
Bet your spinning reel has line twist on it
That's a great idea! Good looking fish in that dark water. 👍👍
🐟🎣cool vid🐟
