My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

  1. Does thermocline still play a roll in the depth you fish? I thought the thermocline played a roll until the temperature and wind combine to mix the water column up (i.e. turnover). And the dissolution of the thermocline marked a change in fishing strategy.

  2. Thank you for the info/tips – temps have not dropped that low (yet) here, but nights are getting colder – I was going to go out a bit earlier tomorrow yet now will wait a few hours for it to warm up a bit – thank you for the info to slow down a bit (this will be hard for me, but I will try !) – should I also look to change the size of bait/lure I am using ?

  3. Hi Matt. It is a misconception that bass feed up for winter and put on weight. They are cold blooded and do not store unsaturated fat for insulation or to be used as fuel to stay warm like warm blooded creatures. While they are capable of storing saturated fat, that is for short term body maintenance. Sometimes it seems as though they are feeding up for winter in the fall, but that may be due to shorter feeding windows because of shorter days, schooling of baitfish and bass following etc. making it seem like they are feeding up with an angler catching more bass in a shorter amount of time.

  4. I've had a great day fishing. 1st fish was a huge crappie on a 4" Berkley spook, 2 nice smallmouth. Switched to a popper with a fly trailer and got 2 more huge crappie and a largemouth then finished the day out with 2 more largemouth on a sluggo. They were near the bank this morning and started going deeper after noon.😊Thanks

  5. Had an odd thing happen today. I live in Ohio so we’ve also had a temperature drop. Today I caught a 3+ pounder on a jig in about 6’ of water. Hooked him in the corner of the mouth. I landed, unhooked, weighed it, and release it all fairly quickly. It swam away but stayed shallow, next thing I know, it’s laying on its side, and ended up dying. Could it be a combination of the fast temperature drop and being caught was to much of a shock to the fish
