Top 5 Baits for May Bass Fishing!

The bass are in transition and we’re showing you how to catch them! May brings a lot of change in bass fishing. There are still lingering spawners but there are also a lot of post spawn fish. Some go deep right away while others stay shallow around cover. If you love fishing aggressively, you can power fish for post spawners and if you prefer to slow fish you can pick apart shallow cover.

While we strive to stick with 5 baits, there is so much going on in May we couldn’t quite narrow it down that far. In actuality Tim breaks down 9 key baits and what each one is for. You may be able to combine one or two of these on your lake to really narrow it down but all of them will catch fish this month.

Below you’ll find links to the baits discussed in the video. We’ve listed them in the order they appeared and included our favorite sizes and colors for each. We’ve also included a couple budget combos to help you consistently land the fish that bite. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

  1. I just started bass fishing and have a hard time sometimes my urban fishing is over fished but I have been having good luck with a ikes micro jig with a craw trailer usually a yum craw love the videos

  2. Great information as always. What about a fluke stick?? I don't think I've heard you guys talk about that Bait very much. Where I fish in south Louisiana, that is a deadly bait for me around here. You get the best of both worlds in a senko, sorta, and a fluke. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work!

  3. Went to Cherokee yesterday. Watching this now and wishing I tried a shaky head. I tried multiple cranks, drop shot, finesse jigs, c rig, ned, and a lipless.. ended up catching mine on a ned and a jerk bait on main points. Was really hoping to find them shallow, but no luck. Was almost like winter fishing.

  4. Havent gotten one bite this season yet 🤦🏽‍♂️. Cant find them or they just not biting my baits i tried, spinner bait green pumpkin color, i tried top water frog. last year i had a strike king sexy dawg jr no bits i had the shad color with chartreuse stripe across the body no commitment bites but almost had a couple ive tried crankbaits, rattle traps, crank baits, now havent tried a texas rig yet or jig or a good swimbait. I live in the albion Kalamazoo area, the water is stained maybe semi dirty water, and I usually go on sunny days sometimes cloudy, ab 2-5 Feet of water. Anyone have tips maybe colors? Wait im fishing them? I also use a 15 lb braid.

  5. I'm in Oregon and a pond I fish here a lot, usually has fish on beds mid april. Been checking every other day and still not on beds yet!? Maybe due to colder weather? Weird year all around! 🤪

  6. Bought a DD75 this year but having trouble getting it to track correctly. Any advice on how to adjust this crank specifically? Difficult to get to the eyelet embedded in the plastic . 🤷‍♂️

  7. Tim, love the vids! The tips and tricks are normally spot on! I have the trouble of timing what baits you are recommending for a certain time of year being up here in the Northeast. I'm in Southeastern Massachusetts. I've found that we are a month to a month and a half behind you guys down south. Any advice as to timelines to really pinpoint what your recommending down there to uphere? Thanks!
