  1. The last three or four months, I have been experimenting with very large squarebills and very large deep diving crank baits. Baits like the Strike King KVD magnum squarebill 8.0, the Megabass Grenade and Profound Outdoors super deep divers. I don’t catch lots of bass, but I bet I have lost a dozen 4-5 pounders. All these bass come up and shake their heads and throw the crank bait. I use a selection of 7.5 to 8 foot St Croix or G Loomis composite crank bait rods and heavy fluorocarbon. I have yet to boat the bigger bass. The rod just loads up heavy and the bass bull dogs down in the depths. I am not sure if my technique is incorrect. I just lean into the bass with a ton of flex and bow in the rods. Maybe I should try to reel down and knock the heck out of the bass when they strike. I have upgraded to all the special brands and models of treble hooks.

You should do an episode with some tips concerning landing bass on big crank baits. Thanks.

  2. Great tip Tyler. The same thing happened to me two days ago. A fish took my frog, I felt the fish and I set the hook without reeling down. He came out of the water spit the frog.

  3. I’ve been fishing for 25 years now. More and more I’ve proven to myself that a slack line hookset is NOT the way to go. I wholeheartedly disagree with guys like Gerald Swindle on this. You need to feel the weight of the fish swimming away and pull hard.

  4. Hey Tyler….thats a heartbreaker!! Thanks for the tip!! I just got my Finn hat and the t-shirt with the red, white, and blue bass on the front. Very well made product and really fast shipping!! I love them….my new favorite hat by far!! 🍻🍻

  5. When you going to start selling FINN vinyl stickers, big and small? Would love to have 2-3 foot wide one for my new job/bass boat I finished building. NGL you need more products/merch.

  6. My current PB is an 11.4 from small local lake. I've also caught a 9.3 multiple 7 & 8's from same place. I saw I guy catch a 13 from there 2 summers ago. That's biggest bass I've ever seen. The big ones pull hard & you gotta have everything got right to get them in!

  7. Even when everything goes perfectly we can still lose them. I just lost an 8-9 pounder few weeks ago & I had about as perfect as hook set as possible after reeling up slack into them swimming away. It must have been skin hooked or something? She ended up rolling & coming off halfway in. Its just part of the game. But it hurts when you lose a big!

  8. Where was the 8lb-er in Ohio? I missed what may have been a new PB last week because it ran so hard and dove so deep I thought it was for sure a cat so I was letting it run around to not break my rod and then it finally breached like Shamu and threw that shaky head right in my face.

  9. Great info. I remember when I first started fishing a frog I had to remember to chill out and let them eat it before setting the hook haha.

Now, having a fish shake a lure at the boat is another thing 😭

  10. I am a fairly new fisherman and last weekend tried fishing drop shot for the first time. I am not joking when I say I had 30 bites over an hour period but I caught 0 of the fish. Im now wondering if they were rushing towards me and when I set the hook was missing them. This could be a game changer tip. I cant wait to get out there and try reeling in a bit before setting the hook. Great tip.

  11. I did that just yesterday. Same exact thing. This fish was on a bed (super cold lake off a river in Idaho) and dragged the lure off. I saw the line away, and pulled til it was "taught" and set the hook, but he had pulled it into the grass line and I was stuck up in there.

  12. I always feel the slight pressure before I put the steel to them. I’ve watched some of the best known frog pros set immediately on a blowup and never make sure the bass has it in it’s mouth. That’s one bait I especially try not to over react to a blowup.

  13. Man yesterday I broke the rod then the line broke lost my lucky popper and lost the biggest smallie I've ever seen. I hate equipment failures.
