Don’t be afraid of mud! Murky water can be a real challenge, especially in Winter. If you’re tired of being stumped by cold, muddy water, this video is for you! Knowing what baits to use and when to switch between them will make a huge difference. Don’t let muddy water intimidate you anymore, its time to adapt and overcome with these quick tips.
The key to muddy water is understanding when its holding active fish and when it causes them to shut down. In Winter, the distinction is water temperature. Not a specific water temperature but whether the incoming water is warmer or colder than the water in the lake. If its warmer, the baits discussed in this video will help you catch bass consistently.
Focus on lures that have flash, vibration, and bold colors. Focus ultra shallow as the water rises and around cover as it stabilizes. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the baits (with color recommendations) that were discussed in the video.

My lake is very muddy year round. Will theses fish still go deep in 45 degree water
Thanks!!
Matt & Tim are the smartest bass anglers on the planet
How about lakes that are ALWAYS muddy? I’m talking 6-12 inches all year long. Any tips?
Hi Matt. I fish two rivers all summer here in fredericton New Brunswick. The smaller river I fish is the nashwaak river. It is stained up till late July when it clears up when it drops to low water levels. When it stained for weeks after flood water drops to normal levels in June it tough fishing for smallmouth bass
I was using a swim jig last week and caught a flathead catfish which I estimate weighed 40 lbs. Its my largest freshwater catch. Took about 15 minutes to land.
My lake in mn is all bluegill, and ive found that a indiana main blade with a size 2 or 3 colorado is killer on a yellow spinnerbait
Nice video 👍🏻
Interesting video, Matt. I don't see much muddy water here in New England in the spring; most of our inflow is runoff from snowmelt and it's clear and cold.
I've actually found that some of the best days fishing is when there is cold snow melt rushing into the pond/lake. I imagine the clarity and quality of the water has something to do with it, since clear water is more desirable than muddy.
Can you guys review the new Shimano Caius?
For me I use a 1/4oz chatter bait with a white minnow style trailer
Great video fellas. Content is always on point. My go-to channel.
What are the best colors of your river2sea craink bait for spring smallies?
Great tips way to give the juice!
Matt Allen you are one of the best ! I love watching your videos. I learn tons of valuable info and really like the way you present the content. Wish you all the success in the world and just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience to help anglers like myself.
So I am new to Cali and this lake I want to fish is super low rn, they are ready for water coming in for spring from off the mountains and rain, the lake is like 30ft shallow rn, it averages 60 degrees during day and 40 at night. Water is super clear. Any advice anyone?
Hello guys watching all the time you bless the bass community with your awesome info nothing like it fishing with you is on my bucket list lol I'd like to see a video about how to catch bass with a low cost budget fish finder and even with only using a map many of us still cant aford high tech electronics but still be able to find and catch fish thanks
The single blade Colorado spinnerbait is certainly money in bluegill fisheries with murky to muddy water. I will need to experiment with trailers though.
Awesome job Matt 👍👍
Love that you spot lighted spinner baits..I've caught sooooo many fish on them…As always, great video.
Surprised a chatterbait didn't make it. Then again it's either chatter or spinner and appears spinner is the better weedless solution.
No chatterbait?
A black and blue chatter bait has become a favorite of mine in the muddy lake i fish
Pulled up a 6lber off a chatterbait in 38° weather. We have had those exact weather patterns here in NC.
Had to pause the video for a few minutes to ponder the merits of the “kinky beaver”. 🤔
Im confused. You said to use weedless baits but your saying to use baits that are not weedless like a crankbait?
Great video as always guys, thanks. I only get one day each weekend for 4 hours to fish, How can I figure out the bite as fast as possible? Finding winter bass fast and then figuring out what they want to eat in short period of time.
Matt matt whooaa!… please I got to fish against these people they need to be drop shoting robo worms And jerk baits. These baits dont catch fish!… i
