4 Lipless Crankbait Tricks For Springtime Bass Fishing

Prespawn Bass and Lipless crankbaits go hand in hand! After a long Winter of slow fishing its hard to imagine anything better than burning a lipless across shallow flats in search of big prespawn bass! Its ability to cover water quickly combined with amazing drawing power should put the lipless crankbait at the top of your list in Spring. In today’s video Tim teaches two different approaches to lipless fishing and gives some bonus tips along the way that you don’t want to miss.

When you hear the words “lipless crank” most anglers envision burning traps in shallow water, usually around grass beds. This method is so deadly on Spring time bass that its engrained in the minds of bass fishermen everywhere. However there is a second way to fish these baits that is often overlooked and typically catches even bigger fish than the burning method! The slow hop elicits strikes unlike any other lure we’ve ever encountered. It requires very specialized lipless baits to achieve the right action but once mastered, its amazing the caliber of fish you can catch.

Both methods should have a place in your arsenal. Both will work on any given day so we’re typically prepared with both styles of lipless tied on. While both the burning and hopping styles are done with lipless crankbaits, the similarities end there. You’ll want different lures, different weights, and even different line to really dial in the patterns. Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment by style.

  1. I hooked 3 on a lipless crank today and all 3 of them threw the hooks on me …one of them was easily my new pb. I dont get it I'm using a shimano zodias w a curado 150dc. I throw all kinds of lures and they never throw the lure on me but it happened 3 times today. Using braid to mono also I was throwing the lv500 ghost minnow

  2. While I certainly agree with you both that it is necessary to upgrade the hooks and rings I have to point out how crazy that is. Spend 15 dollars or more on ONE lipless bait and the hooks and rings suck bad enough they have to be replaced? Now that is highway robbery. Instead of putting shitty treble hooks and split rings on these very expensive baits they should just leave them off and charge us less.

  3. Lipless cranks are quickly becoming my favorite lure. I still love squarebills, topwater, and Carolina rigs but there’s just something about ripping a lipless through the gas and then getting slammed by a fish. I hooked 10 in the first hour on my 6th Sense Quake yesterday. I cant wait to try the LV500 and Jackal now.

  4. I found a good deal on an 845CBR, one of the older brown ones. Only issue is 3" of the rod tip was broken off, but was professionally repaired. Do you think that will mess up the action? Thanks for all you guys do!

  5. i like lipless cranks.. they cast pretty good. I use those cheap ones the cotton cordell ones.. the red craw one and the shad one work good. i always like to try as many cadences as i can with all my baits.. so any you can think of you would use with any other baits use it with all your baits.. the more tricks and moves you can do the better your chances i think of presenting the same bait. ie. catching bass on a drop shot working it in like a jerk bait.. ect.. not that the different ways will always catch one.. i just think doing different things helps with each cast of just showing the bass something else instead of same cast over and over.. though i still skunk at Castaic.. doing this method has caught me fish in a super high pressured area (i would argue the most pressured water in America.) where a lot of people give up fishing because its so hard.
