My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/
I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
It may or may not be legal on your lake. Know before you throw!
I'm not a big umbrella rig guy myself. Nothing against it. I just don't like casting it and storing on my kayak. That being said I do have a few. And this technique does seem interesting and does seem like it would work. I fish a lot of rock bottom cylinder weights or the only way I can even fish a drop shot. I wonder if this thing we get hung up pretty fast around rip rap? I imagine you can get it free pretty easily if you're not slack lining it
Thanks!!!
Did you build a specific rod for A-rig? If so which Blank? Thanks
I'll stand behind what I say on other channels that A-Rig y Umbrella Rigs are for amaters. Oh how they hate me. It is true tho. Here's my argument. If you can't catch fish with one swimbait, knit. Smallies? Prolly better with other deep lures. Not, prolly, but for reals. For reals prolly, bc I don't want to share secrets.
Losing a Farmers Hog would prolly make these amaters cry. Mostly, I see them with the Yum or Booyah wires. I found one and lost it bc I absolutely do not care for them and stick it on the side of my backpack.
The brother said he wants a compact A-Rig. I said that they're still too bulky to throw. I showed him a modded LiveTarget Baitball modded so that you can throw any jighead on it. That's the way to go. That's how you have the advantage over the competition.
Off couse, I have stated I add weights to my swimbaits so they can do this. That's not the only thing I add to them. Sometimes I add glowsticks…..sometimes they make rackets. What I'm saying is that with the right bait and achieving depth, you can pretty much catch fish without unnecessary bull of an A-Rig. A-Rigs are best for trolling as seen by the Atlas, but who's gonna troll for bass?
I appreciate this one, I think it's going to be murder on the flounder next year.
πΊThanks Matt. My contacts say that Tackle Warehouse will be doing their Black Friday sales a little different this year. Not everything will be on sale at the same time. Iβve been told to purchase your high end (reels) on/during the real Black Friday ( day after Thanksgiving) but save your high end βrodβ purchases until a sale they will announce/hold prior to Christmas.
I thought it was going to be about the way the arms are bent from the joint at the head. In the thumbnail the arms are bent at a sharp angle directly from the head. That's a no no! That's how they eventually break off at the crease. The "hack" that prevents the arms from breaking is to bend them about 1/4" from the head and not use a sharp angle. Use a rounded gradual bend so there is no crease. Tactical Bassin shared that tip a few years ago. And i learned about it about the same time i discovered there channel, if its not the actual reason i discovered them. I was learning how to make my own A rigs at the time.
But since I brought up their A rig configuration, that i also adopted, i did eventually invert it to work along the bottom too. The difference is that I simply made my own 3/8 ounce dummy heads for the two shorter arms, so they would still have baits on them. And the three longer arms could have 1/16 oz heads sticking up and away from the dummy rigs.
And of course I could use nearly any size 90 degree jig hook for the lighter heads because i pour them myself also.
My most successful setup is the Tactical Bassin configuration with the two very light dummies on the top and three longer arms below. What's different with my A rigs, however, is that i use one 1/2oz to 3/4oz shad head for the longest center arm. And two 3/8 oz shadhead jigs for the left and right longer side arms. And ALL 5 arms having 2-1/2" generic shad bodies. That's why i have to pour my own. When was the last time you saw a 1/2oz or 3/4oz shad jighead with a 1/0, 90 degree jig hook?π
What model rod are you using with this setup?
Thanks Matt
I'm curious if anyone has messed with trolling an umbrella rig off a downrigger for trout and salmon instead of using more traditional attractors
They also have umbrella rigs with, what they call, a "stiff arm". Apparently it helps with fishing it on the bottom.
Wow, thatβs an amazing hack. Also similar to a walleye bottom bouncer.
Great info Matt.
Also, what setup do you use for A-rig, rod, reel, line, etc?
Thanks for the hack Matt, I personally donβt think it is cheating
Just moved from Wisconsin to Arkansas and this should be a killer technique on the 20-30 foot flats here on Norfolk lake THANKS MATT!
What rod action and length for this technique? Cool idea.
This is a cool setup and the core tackle rigs looks like a great way to set this up! Thanks for these great tips Matt!!
A-Rigs banned but FFS is legal. Go figure. FFS is more devastating to fisheries than an A-Rig ever would.
Thanks for the A rig hack will be very useful next fall in our classic where we target smallies
Good tips Matt, thanks π
Matt ryugi makes a rig called the deep tracer that does the same thing but for single bait. You can use it to fish a glide bait or any bait down in 50 foot of water. I do really good in the winter time using it to slowly swim a 2.8 swimbait just off the bottom.
Great tip. You never sent me that Rapala on the wall.LOL
Dang Matt this is a good tip canβt believe your giving it up lol
FFS is alright but A-Rigs is not what a joke itβs all about the money ππππ
Holy smokes! You sir have made me a very happy man today. I have only been throwing an A-rig for a few years now and tend to shy away from it because I always let it go to the bottom and slow roll it back to boat right along the bottom but always get hung up. I lost probably 10 A-rigs last winter. I got 4 now and was going to order more to be stocked for this winter but now hopefully I don't have to. Thank you for sharing this.
πππππ
Very cool! Thanks for the video!
I look at that Amazon box every single video. Im going to be disappointed the day it gets moved. π
Has anyone ever tried keel weighted swim bait hooks instead of open jig heads?
I bet that would be cool π€πΌ
That will also work if you have slime or grass. You use the weights for catfishing they ate a cylinder stile but have a tub they are in with an eyelet on top. Iβve seen them form 4β to 12β long and from 1/8oz to 6oz they use them on the Mississippi river drifting and bottom bouncing. But will help get that contact without the gunk or small longs it will keep the head up high enough to go over it and not hit it . ππΌπ€πΌπ€πΌ
Very cool hack. Thanks for sharing.
