Randy, you need to educate yourself on biology. Evolution does not happen over a few years, or a few decades. Evolution is caused by RANDOM genetic mutations occurring over very long periods of time. Tens of thousands, or millions of years. Bass behavior may be changing, but it is not due to evolution.
I still catch fish on the Humpback Rattler (Humpy), in fact, you even mentioned it specifically on one of your videos. Little scooper, not so much.
I had come across my wife’s dads old tackle box and have been throwing occasionally a goofy bait not knowing what it was, it turns out, it is a Hellbender. I can confirm, I can’t catch anything on that thing. This is in WA State.
I still fish them, from time to time… The Hellbender was called a MudBug back in my day, and nothing less than a 3lb bass…
Grist to see them again and thanks for bringing back these amazing lures…
Have you got any cotton cordell boy howdies? Excellent on schooling fish
Those bring back a lot of memories! A silver hellbender was my go-to crank/trolling lure in the late 70s on the lake I grew up on in Texas. They caught everything, from bass, catfish, drum and even some big crappie when worked around brush piles. My PB was compliments of a hula popper, cranked in by a Zebco 404!
Randy have u even tested that theory? I kinda find that hard to believe if they’re hittin similar newer baits they’d hit those. Spinnerbait is in my top 3 baits and it’s one of the oldest. Not so sure I’m gonna buy that .
Horse pucky!
Oh Man ! Another Blast from the past on those baits..When I was late teen that Hellbender in Christmas Tree was a killer bait in San Diego in the late 70s and 80s. The frog pattern was also a go too at lake Silverwood. Again, that Rebel in green fire tiger provided me with 50 fish days back then..Ahhh if only 🥴 Fisheries always over state true numbers of fish in our water ways. Exactly as you stated, compared to what " was" and compared to today ? No comparison to be made. I know every angler on this feed has idled around a body of water Sonar pinging away and seen fish literally move from the area. I have noticed this trend more and more every year. Crappy are notorious for being sensitive to our Sonar and I have witnessed them moving off key structure when boat passes over. New lakes, marshes and watersheds are what's needed. Better and more thoughtful management is needed. FFS needs to be outlawed and I personally think the spawn should be closed as well. I know, I know, this may be unpopular however, if you truly love the sport and the fish ? Then we should gladly let them have some quiet time to breed and guard the nest. Just sayin ( Fishin hacks) 😆 stay safe !
I call BS on most of the stuff you stated..#1 you haven’t went out lately and even used the Hellbender or Jitterbug #2 20 lb bags every time you fished, that’s laughable!! #3 evolution isn’t happening. Evolution is a religion. You must have faith to believe it. #4 the reason you can’t build more lakes is because of your liberal environmentalist won’t let you.. too many tree huggers. #5 millions of years.
Randy, did you ever throw an Arbogast Mud Bug? My dad was a guide on Toledo Bend in the 70s, and this was a good bait in those days.
So… while I completely agree with your observations, the A-rig and Whopper Plopper being the best recent examples of baits stop working. But there’s also them old baits that still work amazingly. Spinner baits, buzz baits and Rat-L-Traps come to mind. Not sure what’s going on.
Out of the four baits I have only used the hula popper and catch a lot of bass on it all summer and big ones. I almost always start the day with one in the warmer months. I fish smaller lakes most of the time so maybe that’s the reason it’s working for me.
I agree 100% we need more lakes for all the reasons you mentioned plus clean hydroelectric power.
I caught a 4lb bass on a spook this summer…it had a hula poper in its mouth
There were just studies done on sam Rayburn that the majority of bass don't get caught in a full yr. Kinda goes against anglers are depleting bass
I got into my old box and tied on my only lazy ike. caught 3 in a row and then broke it off and lost it.
Pressure on them make them more selective foragers… old school lures included. More boats make them more skittish.
Live scope does not help.. It is like Deer Hunting in a fenced in area. I told a guy at the lake awhile back you fishing or sub hunting with all those electronics I think I pissed him off.
Not true if you go by fish and wildlife surveys! And what gets shocked up….. do you ever make a video that's not negative about something?
