Finding BassMo'! Best, Bass Finding, Basics!
Welcome back to Big Leo, Your Big Bass Buddy!
In today’s Fishing Planet Tips & Tricks episode, we’re learning how to READ THE WATER, UNDERSTAND THE WEATHER, AND FIND THE BIG BASS!
One of the biggest mistakes new players make is arriving at a waterway, selecting a favorite lure, and immediately casting without considering the conditions.
Fishing Planet provides valuable information about each waterway, its fish population, weather conditions, and water temperature.
BUT DO WE KNOW HOW TO USE THAT INFORMATION?
Today, we’re putting those details together to develop a fishing strategy BEFORE making our first cast!
WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE
1. READING THE WATERWAY INFORMATION CARDS
Before traveling to a new location, we need to understand what we’re getting into!
We’ll examine Fishing Planet’s waterway information cards to identify:
Which waterways contain Largemouth Bass.
Available species and fish-size classifications.
Opportunities to pursue Trophy and Unique Bass.
How to select promising fishing destinations.
BEFORE WE CHASE THE BIG BASS, WE NEED TO KNOW WHERE THEY LIVE!
2. UNDERSTANDING WEATHER & WATER TEMPERATURE
Next, we’re examining Fishing Planet’s weather indicators and fishing activity forecasts.
We’ll discuss cloud cover, ambient temperature, water temperature, and daily bite predictions.
Are we fishing under clear skies or heavy overcast conditions? Is the water warming or cooling? What does the forecast suggest about feeding activity?
3. READING THE WATER AND UNDERWATER STRUCTURE
One of the most important skills in Fishing Planet is recognizing productive bass-holding locations.
We’ll examine:
Reed lines, lily pads, and vegetation.
Submerged logs and fallen trees.
Shallow flats and deep-water transitions.
Dropoffs, structural edges, and ambush locations.
BIG BASS LOVE STRUCTURE, BUT PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO WHERE STRUCTURE MEETS DEPTH!
These transition zones can be excellent starting points when searching for trophy-class Largemouth Bass.
4. WATER TEMPERATURE & FISHING DEPTH
Our first Big Leo infographic examines how water temperatures can influence our decisions about fishing depth.
Cooler conditions may encourage us to investigate shallow water, vegetation, and surface cover.
As water temperatures rise, we’ll consider deeper structure, shaded areas, and dropoffs.
We’ll also explore how overcast skies may affect our approach.
THE OBJECTIVE: FIND THE DEPTH WHERE THE BIG BASS ARE HOLDING!
5. CHOOSING LURES FOR DIFFERENT DEPTHS
Our second infographic examines artificial lure selection throughout the water column.
SURFACE & SHALLOW: Walkers, poppers, and frogs.
MID-SHALLOW: Spinnerbaits, shallow crankbaits, and swimbaits.
MID-DEPTH: Crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and rigged plastics.
DEEPER WATER: Jigs, worms, craw-style plastics, and other deeper presentations.
We’ll discuss a strategy I’ve found particularly useful:
USE MOVING BAITS TO LOCATE FISH, THEN SWITCH TO DELIBERATE PRESENTATIONS TO TARGET THE BIGGUNS!
6. LURE COLORS: BRIGHT BAITS VS. DARK SILHOUETTES
Our third infographic explores lure visibility and color selection.
CLEAR WATER & BRIGHT SKIES: Natural colors and realistic baitfish patterns.
OVERCAST CONDITIONS: Experimenting with brighter colors and contrasting presentations.
STAINED WATER: Considering darker silhouettes and strong contrast.
CHANGING CONDITIONS: Rotating lure colors systematically to discover what produces results.
We’ll compare brightly colored lures with darker baits that create distinctive silhouettes against available light.
Remember, no single color is guaranteed to work under every condition!
7. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
Before making your first cast, ask yourself:
WHERE ARE THE BIG BASS?
WHAT DEPTH SHOULD I TARGET?
WHICH LURE WILL REACH THAT DEPTH?
WHAT COLOR AND PRESENTATION SHOULD I TRY FIRST?
By combining waterway information, weather conditions, water temperature, underwater structure, and lure selection, we can approach each fishing session with a deliberate strategy.
And when the initial approach doesn’t work?
WE ADJUST, EXPERIMENT, AND KEEP LEARNING!
THE BIG LEO PHILOSOPHY
At Big Leo, we’re not simply memorizing fishing spots or repeatedly throwing the same lure.
We want to understand Fishing Planet’s mechanics, test our theories, and develop practical strategies for consistently finding BIG BASS!
Weather, temperature, depth, structure, lure selection, and visibility all deserve consideration. These are strategic starting points, not guarantees of a strike.
THE PRESENTATION DETERMINES THE EQUIPMENT, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
LET THE CONDITIONS HELP DETERMINE THE PRESENTATION!
ONE GAME. ONE SPECIES. ONE PURSUIT. UNIQUE LARGEMOUTH BASS!
