Chatter Baits Not Just For Bass Fishing

Still think a ChatterBait is just for bass fishing? Let’s take that conversation to the saltwater!

I’m talking gator trout, monster snook, and even the chance at a big black drum! Today, I’m breaking down my fall-transition ChatterBait setup—the baits, the colors, the trailers, and how I like to fish them.”
“During the fall transition, I’m looking for bait, moving water, and places where fish can ambush a meal. Grass edges, drop-offs, and mangrove shorelines are where I want to spend my time.

One of my go-to baits is the Z-Man JackHammer in three-eighths and half-ounce. That quick-starting blade and erratic movement are exactly what I’m looking for in a bladed jig.”

“I also like the Z-Man ChatterBait Elite EVO in those same three-eighths- and half-ounce sizes. It gets vibrating quickly and has that hunting action that breaks up a straight retrieve.”

“My starting point? Three-eighths when I’m working shallower. Half-ounce when I want to work deeper or need more weight in the current. I choose the weight that lets me work the bait where I want it—not just drag it across the bottom.”
“Now, let’s keep the colors simple. There are only three colors I like to throw: white/chartreuse, Spot Remover, and plain white.

That’s it!

For the saltwater fishing I do, those are the only colors I feel I need. That’s my confidence lineup. I’d rather spend my time figuring out the right depth and retrieve than digging through twenty different colors.”
