Fall fishing on the San Joaquin River in California! 🎣 I’m searching for crappie and redear sunfish (shellcrackers) to find out if they’re moving closer to shore and becoming more accessible to bank anglers as the water gets colder.

In this fishing trip, I’m using small plastic lures to target fall crappie, redear sunfish, bluegill, and bass along the banks of the San Joaquin River. I test different locations, explore deeper water and rocky banks, and look for areas with cover that might hold more fish.

The 1.5-inch Flex Bug in chartreuse and white, paired with a 1/64 oz jighead, produces several fish, including two crappie and a beautiful redear sunfish. Bluegill and bass are also active throughout the trip!

But are the crappie and shellcrackers moving close enough to shore for bank fishermen to catch them consistently? Based on today’s results, the fish are in the system, but the bigger fall bite may need more time to develop.
