There is an incredibly basic fishing skill that almost nobody teaches: how to use split rings correctly. A lot of anglers avoid changing damaged hooks because split rings feel slow, awkward, and frustrating when they do not have the right pliers.
In this video, I show how split ring pliers actually work, what separates a good pair from a bad pair, how to remove and replace hooks without damaging the ring, and what to inspect before trusting a split ring. I also explain the Japanese jigging setup that finally forced me to learn this skill and why Japanese anglers often change jigs without cutting and retying their line.
