My Profile:
http://www.mattstefanfishing.com/

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

  1. for the Keitech easy shiners, Yes there aren't durable as we would like them to be. I have a small solution for that, I make my own Do-It 1/0 Owner screw lock round ball or worm nose in 3/16oz – 1/8oz jigheads and suggest others that readers to find a buddy that makes them for you or make them yourself. And I rig the Easy Shiner sideways, Doug Stange from In-Fisherman TV does it all the time and it works great!
When the one side of the ES is used up, I re-rig to the other side of the same swimbait until that side is used up. IF the boot tail gets ripped off, don't throw it away, saved them to use for a dropshot soft plastic bait. Hopes this helps guys!

  2. Big Bite Baits Cane thumper are good… but recently I've tried the Ozark Trails paddle tails from Walmart, and they work really well and will save you a lot of money. Don't knock it until you try it… 🤙

  3. Matt, what’s a good jig head to use on the 3” easy shiner? Been looking around but everything seems to have too big of a hook or a keeper that is almost as big as the bait head.

  4. Hey Matt .. Did you ever try trimming some of the sides of the tails ,to give less of a swimming motion.
I think I might try that myself… The Frye Guy…

  5. Aside from the most popular swimbaits, the BPS squirming shad has a very tight wiggle….2" & 3" size is one of the best pond baits I've found. Period. Pumpkin/pearl. If I want more tail kick, I use a lighter and bend the tail down. 😊

  6. Can’t believe I’m giving this one up but, the Jackall Rhythm Wave has become a favorite for me recently for everything from big crappies to big walleyes. The Rage Swimmer is another favorite. And Northland just released their Eye Candy line of plastics and the Paddle Shads are great. They are made out of a similar material to Z-Man so ultra durable and they absorb scent really well that you put on the baits. I tend to like scented plastics for smallmouth a lot

  7. 5" grass pig cut down about an inch is a great swim jig trailer. The stiffer material not only holds up well (like the RI Dippers) it transmits the tail kick to the head of the bait. A 1/4 or 3/8oz swim jig has a ton of wag and roll with this trailer. It's also a great bait by itself to fish through fairly thick vegetation when rigged on a belly weighted swimbait hook.

  8. Great video, Matt. In FL, the gar and bowfin like to bite the tails off of swimbaits and speedworms. When I fish the swimbait, I usually go with the Berkley power swimmer or one of the Zman elaztec options because of that.

  9. Great video, I love throwing these smaller swimsuits, one I have had a bunch of success with is the Scottsboro, the one Christi was promoting, very good swimbait!!!

  10. terrific vid Matt, on a big topic. I also like the Largo shad at times. And for small version of 2.8 fat impact, the hazedong is good option especially in ponds. I need to try the easy shiner more in summer since i typically only use that in colder temps. 👍

  11. Megabass Spark Shad was the first swimbait I fell in love with, but they get torn up pretty easily. I've recently switched to Z-Man Minnowz for that reason. I still throw the spark shad, but if the bite is hot I swap in the minnowz to save a few bucks.

  12. Z-Man slim swims & finesse /worm or shadz,on their finesse bullets, jig head, when more thump is needed we change to an under spin or vibrating jig head

  13. Six sense divine swimbaits are nice durable baits with a tight tail kick. There is a lake in western North Carolina that a buddy of mine swears no other bait works but it. We have a tourney there next month. I plan to throw one of those baits with a tushy in it if I can get it to go inside one.

  14. I have a secret to catching… I just went to Canada and I caught a few bass to
Have a fish fry and When I Fillet them I
Check their stomach contact and every fish even a walleye had green crawfish with orange spots on them so I took a Christie craw and some berkley jesters and used a orange dye pen and matched their food source and killed them but I also like Fishing the mega bass hazedong swimbait with some orange on it and we’re boating them too… got real hot the last couple of days and I went to a maxscent general on a weighted seedless wacky hook to get it down in the grass beds and continued to crush them….

  15. Oh man I really enjoyed this vid. I am such a fan of small bait fishing. My fav's are Megabass Hazedong Keitech 2 inch EZ and Swing Impact always land me big fish!

  16. look, the northland mimic minnow is a great bait…. but losing tails on them is very verrry annoying… I love the lure the action is always good and fish demolish it! But you willll lose the plastic tails to damage! I caught my first couple bass on this bait with my grandfather when I went fishing for the first time so it has a special place in my heart!

  17. I was eyeing some Rage Minnows earlier at Walmart but all I needed was tiny hooks for catching bait. Unfortunately the little hooks didn't work this evening. Maybe tomorrow. Eventually I'll try ribbed swim baits.
You might like the Salt Strong Slam Shady, Mulligan and I don't remember the bigger one's name, but I doubt bass have seen them. The Slam Shady and Mulligan are probably good for your Hover Rigs. And the Mulligan has dimples like a golf ball so it casts farther. They have videos proving it.

  18. If you want a hard thumping tail for dirty water the rage tail swimmer from SK is great- it's basically a Keitech with a harder kick. If I want something with a more natural kick but still hard enough to use in stained water- the Keitech Swing impact Fat is the way I go. If I have clearer water the Keitech EZ Shiner has a lazy, natural kick to it. The Mega Bass Spark Shad has a tighter kick but- it's high frequency. I like them for suspended fish because they seem to stay horizontal better than other swim baits- they don't nosedive as much. And if I want something with a little girth to it, to fish closer to bottom- usually with an underspin- the Storm Largo Shad is a really good little swim bait.
